Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Pt VI, Line 11B

The 990 is reviewed and approved by the board of directors at a meeting held prior to final submission.

Pt VI, Line 12C

Board members and key employees are monitored by each other and funding organization for activity that could result in conflict of interest and board members are required to know and understand this policy for board membership. Additionally, the financial policies and procedures document is regularly reviewed for accuracy and relevance and it is often requested by finding organizations as part of contract acceptance and implementation.

Pt VI, Line 15A

The executive director position is managed by the board of directors. Salary and benefits obligations are determined by the executive committee.

Pt VI, Line 15B

All positions other than the executive director are managed and approved by the executive director.

Pt VI, Line 19

All governing and financial documents have been made available to the public on request.

Financial Statement Notes

Pt X, Line 2

The metropolitan energy center has filed all required tax returns in the required jurisdictions in a timely manner. The metropolitan energy center's income and tax filings are subject to audit by the various taxing authorities. The center's federal return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) for the year ended december 31, 2013 remains subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally three years after they are filed. Management evaluates the metropolitan energy center's tax positions annualy for any potential changes or issues that may result in uncertainty in the accounting for income taxes and makes a determination regarding their likelihood of being upheld under review. Management has reviewed all sources of revenue and believes that none of the center's activities have produced income subject to tax on unrelated business income. Management believes that the metropolitan energy center operations have been conducted in accordance with its tax-exempt status, that the metropolitan energy center has adequately addressed all tax posistions and that there are no unrecorded tax liabilities. The metropolitan energy center did not record any interest or penalties related to tax filings in the statement of activities or statement of financial positions as of and during the year ended december 31, 2014.

Pt IV, Line 2B

Custodial funds held for others - the balance in this account consists of $483,174 in recovered federal funding from a vendor for a grant made in prior years. Per agreement with the federal funding agency, these will be reallocated to other participating vendors in the program for additional work done by them and not previously reimbursed. The remainder of the account consists of rebates due to participants in the home performance with energy star program with missouri gas energy and kansas city power and light. Rebates of up to $1,200 are granted for improving residential energy efficiency and home comfort.
