FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Sustainable sandhills is a nonprofit dedicated to conserving the natural resources of the eight county region surrounding fort bragg, nc. Through education, demonstration and collaboration, we are changing the ways we live, work and play.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Regional and national issues, from local food to water. 4.we've installed free energy, water and money-saving materials in over 100 homes of the elderly and low-income residents across our region through our conservation assistance program. 5.through our many events and programs, we've personally engaged with thousands of our local residents, becoming the go-to organization for awareness and education of sustainable initiatives. 6.we developed the survey that got more than 700 responses and helped sandhills farm to table create their business plan, resulting today in one of the most successful and innovative csa's in the country. 7.our urban farm tour events have hosted more than 800 local residents and their "ah-haa" moments with farm sites, demonstrations and lots of inspiration on what each of us can nurture in our own back yard. 8.every november, we help host household hazardous waste disposal day with moore county officials, emptying the paint cans, chemicals, paper, fluorescent bulbs and other specialized disposables from the trunks and truck beds of more than 900 vehicles passing through our collection line. 9.candor, nc has the highest obesity rate among children third grade and lower in the country, and we are partnering with healthy kids/healthy communities to find solutions - including healthy food access - for this and other rural communities. 10.over 30 % of sampled streams in north carolina are classified as impaired and do not meet standards for safe drinking water or their best use. Sustainable sandhills is working to improve our drinking water by advocating for increased low impact development standards, reduced use of pollutants, and maintaining vegetated stream buffers that help filter runoff. 11.between 2000 and 2010 our population grew by 18.5 percent. Our population is expected to increase from 9.5 to 12.4 million by 2030. Our green growth program works to conserve priority wildlife habitat and protect important ecosystem services while homes, businesses, and roads are developed.
