“One on One Consulting: For 2013, The Isuroon office received 567 calls from Somali women and men requesting health information and referrals. We successfully guided them on health education topics related to chronic illnesses such as depression, irregular period, gestational diabetes, infection and obesity. Also, we provided referrals to alternative medicine clinics (acupuncture) and mental health clinics. Health Education: Twice a week Isuroon conducted health education through conference calls that were organized by Somali women. The average callers were 270 and reached total of 28,080 women. Topics discussed included sexual health, sexually transmitted diseases (Chlamydia, HIV, etc.), child-spacing, domestic violence and diet. The conference call is the newest innovative way for Somali women and Isuroon to work together to reach and deliver culturally specific health education is Somali. Community Meetings: Isuroon prides itself in involving the Somali community in everything we do. In 2013, we held eight community meetings with an average attendance of 40 people and a total of 336 people. These meetings are critical to engage and update the community on what is going on and also get their feedback. We have community leaders who advise Isuroon about the concerns of the Somali community. This accomplishment made us the most trusted community-led organization. Advocacy: We have been active at the Minnesota State Legislator. We shed light on the lack of success in addressing disparity due to funding inequality, racism and the lack of culturally specific programs. We accomplished movement at the legislator to investigate the reasons disparity is persistent in our state. Isuroon is on the frontline in making this issue an important priority. Teen Pregnancy Prevention: The research purpose was to identify cultural barriers to adopting sexual health education programs among Somali parents and youth. We conducted focus groups with Somali parents, faith leaders and youth. The biggest milestone for this project was that Somali elders trusted Isuroon to lead this sensitive topic.”
