Promotes reflective judgment, strategic communication, the common good and purposeful living through a core curriculum, liberal arts and professional majors and student development programs. By-laws were updated as follows: removed provision for review of board of trustee candidates by sisters of mercy. Added provision naming the president of the university as a non-voting ex officio member of the board. Added provision naming the president of alumni association, the faculty chair of the university and the president of the student government association (sga) as non-voting ex officio representatives to the board. Added provision that new board members and incumbent board members eligible for re-election shall be nominated by the governance committee and elected by a majority vote of those voting board members in attendance at the meeting. Added provision allowing for any board member to resign at any time by submitting a written notice to the board chair or secretary. Such resignation shall take effect at the time specified therein or within 30 days of the date of receipt. Added provisions regarding the number of regular meetings, method of meeting notices for regular and special meetings, remote participation in board meetings, and determination of quorum. Revised provision naming officers of the board as the chair, vice chair, secretary and immediate past chair and defining the roles of the officer positions. Added provisions naming the provost and vice president of academic affairs as chief academic officer of the institution and naming the vice president of business and finance as the chief financial officer and treasurer of the institution. Added provisions regarding the purpose and duties of various committees. Added provision stating that board members are volunteers and are not compensated for their services.

The executive committee of the board of trustees each year reviews the salary and benefits of the president, provost and vice president for academic affairs, vice president for business and finance, vice president for development and alumni relations, vice president for enrollment and marketing, vice president for student success, and vice president for mission and ministry. As a part of the review, the salaries for similar positions in higher education are researched and compared with the salaries at mount mercy in order to determine reasonableness and competitiveness. The executive committee either approves the salaries or makes recommendations for adjustments based upon the comparative data supplied. All compensation decisions are contemporaneously documented.

The university is recognized as exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The university may be subject to federal and state income taxes on any net income from unrelated business activities. The university files a form 990 (return of organization exempt from income tax) annually and unrelated business income (ubi) is reported on form 990-t, as appropriate. Management has evaluated their material tax positions, which include such matters as the tax exempt status and various positions relative to potential sources of ubi. As of june 30, 2020 and 2019, there were no uncertain tax benefits identified and recorded as a liability.
