Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Innercity tennis foundation (ict), founded in 1952, is on a mission to unleash and develop the potential of youth on and off the tennis court by engaging and serving a supportive community. (see schedule o)the foundation uses tennis as a vehicle to engage youth and provide coaching, mentoring, and life skills development to youth at ict's tennis center and all through minneapolis in parks, schools, and partner locations.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

The officers and chairs of the board's standing committees shall serve on the executive committee. Except for the power to amend the corporation's articles of incorporation and bylaws, the executive committee shall have all the powers and authority of the board in the intervals between meetings of the board, and is subject to the direction and control of the board. Major decisions of the executive committee shall be reviewed and ratified, or otherwise acted upon, by the board at its next meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The foundation's conflict of interest policy covers directors, officers and any employees who may influence the actions of the foundation. Board members are required to disclose any conflicts of interests annually at the december board meeting. A conflict of interest policy and statement is distributed to the board in conjunction with the board meeting. Board members and officers sign and return the statement to the executive director on behalf of the board. The board, or a duly constituted committee thereof, shall determine if a conflict exists and, in the case of an existing conflict, whether the contemplated transaction may be authorized as just, fair, and reasonable to the foundation. Individuals with a conflict of interest may not participate in the discussion nor the approval of the transaction. All proceedings related to conflicts of interest are documented in the meeting minutes.

The board of directors receives no compensation from the foundation. The only officer who receives a salary is the executive director. Performance evaluations are conducted by the board chair and executive committee. Salary increases and/or bonuses awarded are determined based on written goals. Annual measurable objectives are identified by the executive director and a self-review is provided. The objectives are reviewed with the officers and the board chair. Final approval of review and compensation is voted on by the board. The deliberation process and determination are documented in the meeting minutes. In addition to that, other njtl chapters across the country are used in determining comparability and benchmarking of salary. The review takes place annually. The process described here was last completed in 2024.

The foundation is a not-for-profit organization that is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and classified by the internal revenue service as other than a private foundation. The foundation follows the accounting standards for uncertain tax positions and files as a tax-exempt organization. No liability has been recognized by the foundation as a result of the implementation of this standard. Should that status be challenged in the future, all years since inception could be subject to review by the internal revenue service.

IRS990/Desc0NATIONAL JUNIOR TENNIS & LEARNING PROGRAMS:INNERCITY TENNIS (ICT) IS A MEMBER OF THE USTA FOUNDATION'S NATIONAL JUNIOR TENNIS AND LEARNING NETWORK, A NETWORK MADE UP OF NONPROFIT YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS THAT OFFER FREE OR LOW-COST TENNIS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMMING TO UNDER-RESOURCED YOUTH. AS SUCH, ICT LEVERAGES TENNIS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MINNEAPOLIS YOUTH TO ACHIEVE POSITIVE SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL GROWTH. OUR COACH-LED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS EMPHASIZE THREE CORE AREAS: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, MENTORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY BELONGING. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT PHYSICALLY ACTIVE YOUTH ARE LESS LIKELY TO ENGAGE IN RISKY BEHAVIORS, WHILE STRONG MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS AND A SENSE OF BELONGING ENHANCE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING, AND REDUCE DELINQUENCY. THESE FACTORS COLLECTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO DECREASED VIOLENCE BY ALLEVIATING STRESS, PROMOTING CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS, AND FOSTERING POSITIVE SOCIAL CONNECTIONS.OUR FLAGSHIP YOUTH TENNIS PROGRAMS INCLUDE:TENNIS IN THE SCHOOLS: THIS PROGRAM OFFERS TOP-TIER YOUTH DEVELOPMENT THROUGH TENNIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOLS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AT NO COST. IT IS STRUCTURED INTO THREE COMPONENTS:IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING: THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR, ICT COACHES WORK IN TWO MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS DAILY FOR 4-8 WEEKS, MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, PROVIDING 3-6 HOURS OF TENNIS INSTRUCTION IN COLLABORATION WITH MPS PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING: ICT COACHES LEAD AFTER-SCHOOL TENNIS CLUBS FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND EXTENDED DAY NETWORKS.SUMMER PROGRAMMING: ICT COACHES PROVIDED TENNIS ENRICHMENT AT EIGHT SITES FOR MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUMMER STUDENTS.TENNIS IN THE PARKS: IN 2024, TENNIS IN THE PARKS WAS HELD AT 24 MINNEAPOLIS PARKS, CONTINUING TO BE ONE OF THE CITY'S MOST ACCESSIBLE AND IMPACTFUL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS THROUGH SPORTS.SUPER SATURDAYS: SUPER SATURDAYS IS A THREE-HOUR, MULTI-SPORT PROGRAM FOR 130 CHILDREN AGES 3-18, HELD TWICE A MONTH ON SATURDAY AFTERNOONS.
