|---|---|---|
| Hawk Island Triathlon: The race began in 2007 to promote health and fitness in an area where residents report higher than average behavioral risk factors, to build awareness of free and low-cost opportunities to swim, bike and run in South Lansing, and to showcase a community plagued by negative stereotypes. We encourage racers of all sizes, shapes, and abilities in a supportive environment to help them achieve their health goals. We allow guides for racers with visual impairments, recumbent trikes and walking supports for folks with MS or other mobility challenges, etc. Participants this year ranged in age from 18 months to 80+. Multiple generations of family members train and participated together. Companies have started wellness programs around this race, sponsoring their employees to train together as a team building exercise. Local health and fitness organizations have started triathlon clubs, and local YMCAs now offer adult and youth triathlon classes. Hundreds of community volunteers come together to encourage participants and keep them safe. We hosted three events for 700+ adults and children, and surveys indicate positive impact on health of participants and perception of the community. | $34,934 | $27,261 |
| South Lansing Farmers Market: The market began in 2009 to bring fresh, locally grown produce to residents in a USDA-designated food desert. The market was open from June through October and featured local growers and artisan producers, as well as live entertainment, children's activities, featured nonprofits, and hot foods. We hosted a total of 28 vendors this season, and averaged 357 shoppers per market. We accept snap benefits (EBT, WIC, and Market Fresh Coupons) and offer Double Up Food Bucks to EBT users who want to stretch their food dollars. We are proud to provide a fresh local food source for people without a nearby grocery store and a family friendly environment where neighbors can socialize, meet the farmers, learn about gardening, and take home healthy, affordable, locally grown food. | $26,316 | $24,447 |
| Garden/Nutrition: Our garden and nutrition programs support increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables among youth, adults, and seniors, primarily within a USDA designated food desert (where low income residents live more than a mile from a full service grocery store that offers fresh produce and other nutritious foods). This year, we grew over a thousand pounds of fresh produce in our demonstration garden and three season hoop house, all of which was donated to local food pantries and the South Lansing Community Kitchen. We manage 4700 sq ft of growing space at our garden, as well as 125 community plots that fed 429 family members. We taught youth, adults, and seniors during several series' of garden/nutrition workshops in our demonstration garden, local schools, community centers, and the YMCA. Topics included basic gardening, composting, pest control, healthy eating on a budget, substituting healthy ingredients in recipes, healthy meal preparation, food preservation, and reading nutrition labels. | $19,400 | $16,570 |
| Outreach and Engagement: Outreach and engagement efforts help us nurture relationships with and among residents and stakeholders we serve. We use our website, social media pages, electronic newsletter, and community calendar to share news, events, and resources submitted by and of interest to stakeholders. We also push information out to the community through PSAs on TV and radio stations, neighborhood newsletters, church bulletins, and old fashioned flyering. We maintain a contact database and resource map to match folks in need with folks who can help. We provide technical assistance to new and existing neighborhood organizations (volunteer recruitment, strategic planning, facilitating visioning, best practices, grant writing, event planning, etc.) We coordinate volunteer recruitment and training for service at the farmers market, community gardens, and neighborhood/park clean-ups. | $13,000 | $12,578 |
