Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

We added a new program activity called ttt. See "train the trainer" program narrative for a more detailed description and its accomplishments in 2019.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

Because of covid-19 spreading in haiti and by order of the haitian government, cofhed had to suspend in april 2020 training for the six students enrolled in the ttt program at the headquarters of cofhed in camp-perrin, haiti. However, the trainees teamed up with community leaders and nurses to educate the local populations about covid-19 while wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. We're aiming to bring the trainees back to the classroom in the fall of 2020 under the health guidelines of haiti's ministry of health.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY INCOME GENERATION THE LOUGOU COMMUNITY MICROCREDIT PROGRAM, WHICH IS MANAGED LOCALLY BY MOFADEL, EXPERIENCED SOME DIFFICULT TIMES DUE TO SOCIOPOLITICAL UNREST WHICH RAVAGED HAITI DURING THE LAST 3 MONTHS OF 2019. THE SLOWDOWN IN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES WAS EXACERBATED BY THE SPREAD OF COVID-19, WHICH DAMAGED THE COUNTRY MUCH FURTHER BY A FULL HALT OF BUSINESS IN MARCH 2020. WITH THE LIFTING OF GOVERNMENT-IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS, MOFADEL'S ACTIVITIES HAVE FULLY RESUMED, ESPECIALLY INTERVIEWING NEW APPLICANTS FOR NEW LOANS. MOFADEL HAS CURRENTLY 253 MEMBERS OF WHOM 175 ARE WOMEN, 58 MEN AND 20 LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAM THE TRAIN THE TRAINER ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM STARTED IN THE FALL OF 2019. THE PROGRAM EQUIPS FIELD ENGAGEMENT CATALYSTS WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO EFFECTIVELY ENGAGE PARTNER COMMUNITIES. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF BOTH CLASSROOM, HANDS-ON TECHNICAL SKILLS, AND IN THE FIELD TRAINING. COFHED MAKES EXPERIENCES AND EXPERTISE AVAILABLE TO THE TRAINEES SO THEY CAN ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY COMPETENCIES TO BECOME EFFECTIVE CATALYSTS, COMMUNITY LEADERS AND CHANGE AGENTS. THE GOAL FOR EACH COMMUNITY IS TO HAVE ENOUGH TRAINED ENGAGEMENT CATALYSTS ON THE GROUND TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS THEY COME TOGETHER TO REFLECT ON AND ANALYZE THEIR EVERYDAY REALITIES BY IDENTIFYING THE ROOTS OF THEIR PROBLEMS AND CREATING SOLUTIONS FOR LASTING TRANSFORMATION. COFHED'S TRAIN THE TRAINER ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM ENABLES MORE EFFECTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH TARGETED COMMUNITIES AND MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO ENGAGE MORE COMMUNITIES AT THE SAME TIME. TRAINEES FROM 6 DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES ARE ACTIVELY TRAINING COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN IMPLEMENTING POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CHANGE TO ADDRESS SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SPIRITUAL SHOCKS. TRAINEES ARE BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH AND INVOLVING COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE ENGAGEMENT PROCESS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN PROTECTING GIRLS AND WOMEN'S RIGHTSCOFHED CONTINUED THE VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM WITH THE GIRLS' CLUB. STAFF DISCUSS MANY FORMS OF VIOLENCE AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES ON GIRLS AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. THE GIRLS FIND THE CLUB AS A SAFE PLACE TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND ADDRESS VIOLENCE ISSUES AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL AND AT HOME. THERE WERE SOME NEW ACTIVITIES FOR THE WOMEN'S GROUP IN 2019. BOTH GROUPS CONTINUED TO MEET, AND THE PLAN IS TO KEEP VIOLENCE PREVENTION AT THE FOREFRONT OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS UNTIL ENOUGH FUNDING IS RAISED TO IMPLEMENT TWO LONG TERM PROGRAMS: RETHINKING POWER AND SHORE UP GIRLS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2COMMUNITY YOUTH PROGRAM DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE ARE MOSTLY FREE, EXTRA TIME IS SPENT WITH THEM TO INTRODUCE SOME NEW ACTIVITIES. THERE WERE FOCUS TALKS ON THE ISSUES OF SEXUALITY, SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES, SPIRITUAL ISSUES, PERSONAL AND HOME HYGIENE, HANDWASHING, BASIC HEALTH PREVENTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH. THEY ALSO LEARN HOW TO CROCHET HEADBANDS (FOR EXAMPLE, ONE OF THE YOUTHS SHARED HIS MACRAME SKILLS AND TAUGHT OTHERS HOW TO MAKE MACRAME BRACELETS). FOR THE END OF SUMMER CELEBRATION, THEY PRACTICED AND PERFORMED DANCES, SKITS, AND A 'KNOWLEDGE GAME" TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO READ MORE AND DO RESEARCH ON CERTAIN SUBJECTS. AT THE VERY END OF THE SUMMER THEY COMPETED IN A FINAL DEBATE FOR PRIZES. ABOUT 200 CHILDREN ATTENDED THIS ACTIVITY 3 TIMES A WEEK IN THE SUMMER. A HOT LUNCH IS ALSO PROVIDED TO HELP MAINTAIN NUTRITIONAL STATUS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc3HEARING AND LISTENING TO COMMUNITY VOICESCOFHED STAFF CONTINUED TO SPEND MORE TIME HEARING WHAT THE VILLAGERS HAD TO SAY AND LISTENING TO THEIR THOUGHTS, STRUGGLES, DREAMS AND EXPECTATIONS. WE INVESTED PRECIOUS TIME IN ENCOURAGING AND MOTIVATING THEM, TRAINING THEM, AND GETTING THEM MORE ENGAGED IN THE VARIOUS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS THEY HAD EMBARKED UPON TO BETTER THEIR LIVING CONDITIONS. WE MET ONCE A WEEK WITH EACH ONE OF THE GROUPS. THE PARTICIPANTS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO ADDRESS ISSUES AFFECTING THEIR LIVES AND WORKED COLLECTIVELY WITH OTHERS TO FIND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. COFHED STAFF OFFERED ESSENTIAL TRAINING ON PLANNING, WORKING TOGETHER, MANAGEMENT, AND LEADERSHIP CAPACITY BUILDING. THE SIX TRAINEES FROM COFHED'S TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAM COORDINATED AND EXECUTED FIELD VISITS WHILE IN TRAINING TO START BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH SIX NEW COMMUNITIES.
