Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To deliver Fun STEM programs and events that inspire Minnesota youth to build confidence, create opportunities and thrive as the next generation of innovators.

High Tech Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides the infrastructure, training and events for more than 6,400 Minnesota students annually, in grades K - 12. Each year we manage the Minnesota FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST LEGO League Junior programs. Through these STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) programs, we train, teach, and empower students and adult volunteers. Kids engage in 8 - 12 weeks of FUN team-based building, computer programming and research to solve real-world problems. In order to make responsible, informed decisions that affect us, our society and our environment, we must understand science and math. Our goals are to reach kids during critical and formative years to ensure their future opportunities in a technology-driven world; to engage populations under-represented in STEM; and to connect adults with students in their communities to foster our future innovators, leaders, collaborators and problem solvers.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The organization's governing body is provided with a copy of form 990 prior to it being filed. The board of directors reviews the form 990 at its next regular board meeting with discussion of the financial and explanatory sections of the form. The executive director will discuss with the preparer of the form 990 any questions, additions, or recommended changes. If changes are made, a revised copy is provided to the board of directors for final review and approval prior to filing of the form.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15B

The organization's governing body is responsible for the review and approval of the compensation of the executive director. The board analyzes past compensation history, comparable industry standards, performance of duties and achievement of goals when determining this compensation. The discussion and final decision is documented in the minutes of the board of directors meeting when this review is completed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Our policies are available electronically and also in our board books where all recorded board meeting documents are retained. Financial statements are reviewed and approved by our board of directors for each month. All information is available by contacting our Executive Director.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0All grant applicants must submit an application form via Survey Monkey. Boston Scientific grant applicants provide an employee number which is verified with Boston Scientific. For our scholarship grants, we specify that teams must be composed of all girls, located in a rural or urban area, serve kids of color and/or low income students. Teams must register with FIRST and High Tech Kids in order to receive a grant. Once teams have paid all of their fees, we cut them a check for the amount they requested (typically the cost of a robot). Our grants are one-time only for a team and are meant to help with the initial start-up costs which can be a barrier for some teams.
