| The Saint Paul Covenant, doing business as East Side Thrive (EST), has developed partnerships through which economically disadvantaged children and youth have the opportunity to develop crucial academic, vocational, social, and life skills. EST administers an after school academic assistance program, where students from Farnsworth Aerospace and Johnson High School receive the targeted attention that has been proven to help them perform better in the classroom. The students receive one-on-one tutoring and homework help from caring and trained adults who mentor and build on-going relationships with them. The students also participate in creative arts activities, including workshops in acting, dance or arts and crafts. EST volunteers and staff create a safe and respectful environment where children and youth are encouraged to take an interest in learning and developing the study skills and techniques to gain a high level of mastery over the areas they struggle with most. EST also provides summer programs, through partnerships with other local nonprofit organizations. EST also produces two Broadway-style musicals each year (one for children in grades 1-6 and one for youth in grades 7-12), in partnership with Farnsworth Aerospace, St. Paul Johnson High School, and First Covenant Church. Children and youth who are cast in these musicals receive coaching in performance, singing, and dancing, and they learn life-long vocational and professional skills such as teamwork, goal-setting, time management, and long-term project commitment. In an effort to involve more youth in the musical, workshops are offered and led by skilled adults, so that students can participate in set construction, set painting, backstage crew, and make-up and accessories. A major component to these musical performances is the investment of volunteers that enriches the lives of the young adults who participate. More than half of these youth rely on assistance from transportation volunteers to coordinate rides to and from rehearsals. That also contributes to strong mentoring relationships being formed among youth and adults. Our musical performances and summer camps focus on cultivating communication, leadership, time management, goal setting, and teamwork skills. Educators at our partner schools have reported to us that they are seeing improvement in the overall GPA of participating students. Parents of children and youth who have participated in our programs have observed their children growing in confidence and in their interest in learning and leadership. Many of them have taken on leadership roles within their schools through joining student council or serving as mentors to other students. These programs help create healthy, safe, and vibrant communities in which everyone can thrive. Many participating students are receiving free or reduced-price school lunch, so EST is also working to fight hunger. Through a partnership with Loaves and Fishers, dinner is provided on Wednesday evenings, and through a partnership with The Sheridan Story, Farnsworth Aerospace, and Gustavus-Adolphus Lutheran Church, we are providing weekend meals for 90 students who are receiving free or reduced price lunches. Volunteers work with school staff to put non-perishable food in the backpacks of participating students on Friday afternoons, so that these students' families are able to prepare meals on weekends. In 2015, 253 unduplicated students regularly attended East Side Thrive and summer programs. | $0 | $41,687 |
