Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Keane Sense of Rhythm's mission is to preserve, present, create, and expand the boundaries of American Tap Dance. We accomplish our mission through educational programs, creation of new works, performing, presenting accessible tap events, collaborating with other artists and investing in talented youth. Our objective is to create thinking leaders in the next generation-people who have the ability to problem solve, think on their feet, and have respect for history as they become leaders and creators in the future.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Leadership Training: The organization teaches historical & percussive tap dance to the youth ensemble (15-20 dancers ages 10 to 18). This group rehearses approx. 110 hours per year each. 25% of these dancers are on scholarship. From passionate beginners to self-acclaimed Tap Nerds, we serve all. Students learn basic thru advanced skills, improvisation, musicality and joy. Our students have expanded their artistic talents and improved their leadership skills. Our goal is to go beyond creating dancers, but to develop people who understand the value of arts and arts education.$0$0
Educational Involvement: Keane Sense of Rhythm continues a relationship with under-funded Elementary School students through grants made by Minnesota State Arts Board, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and from the Target Foundation. We have identified the need to supplement arts education for inner-city students whose arts and history programming has been cut and who do not have the means to achieve this opportunity independently. "Arts Learning" strengthens community partnerships and ensures equal access to the arts for children in our community considered high-risk youth. This year we added a middle school program and 2 summer school programs.Further, this program provides:1. Development of a rubric for addressing national educational standards that can be applied using this program in areas of math, history, music, & PE/dance standards for different age groups2. Improving the economic and racial diversity of school-aged students exposed to dance3. Supplementing arts and PE instruction that have been cut from public school curricula.$0$0
Community Performances: The goal of our producing arm is to produce two events annually. Our 14th annual NTDD was comprised of students from 4 of our inner city school programs. They all got to bus to a theater to perform for each other and the general public. We have expanded our outreach to the streets as well. "Minneapolis Open Streets" provides a perfect opportunity for us to sponsor an activity. Participants can try on tap shoes, get a free mini lesson and dance on our portable floors. We reached over 1000 new audience members with two such events.$0$0
Community Involvement: Students in our youth company average a 5-year commitment. A core group of Alumni perform with us; two have sat on our Board. We consistently receive positive feedback and most importantly, schools and organizations invite us back every year. The Dancing Fair (local manufacturer) has supported us as a key donor since 1997. We enjoy donated space for rehearsals at Ballare Teatro in Minneapolis. While our donor base is not large, they are dedicated and continually support us annually. Our volunteer base contribute in areas such as accounting, photography, video documentation, video editing, writing, graphic design, fundraisers and website content. We are committed to including persons with disabilities in our organization (bookkeeper and graphic designer are disabled, large-type programs are printed, we have an ADA Access Plan in effect. People power has always been our greatest asset, a testament to the value we add to the community.$0$0
