“PART III, PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSE - TO PROVIDE DIVERSE ARTS ENTERTAINMENT OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, RESULTING IN INCREASED VISIBILITY FOR THE MUSICAL TALENTS OF THE GLBTAQ COMMUNITY. PART III, LINE 28, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:THE MINNESOTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (MPO) IS A 65 MEMBER COMMUNITY BASED ORCHESTRAL ENSEMBLE COMPOSED OF SEMIPROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR MUSICIANS. ITS MISSION STATEMENT: THE MINNESOTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA SEEKS TO PROVIDE DIVERSE ARTS ENTERTAINMENT OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, RESULTING IN INCREASED VISIBILITY FOR THE MUSICAL TALENTS OF THE GLBTQA COMMUNITY.THE VISION OF THE MINNESOTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA IS TO PROVIDE ITS DIVERSE MEMBERSHIP WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY THROUGH:1. MUSICAL PERFORMANCES OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY WHICH FEATURE WORKS BY UNDERREPRESENTED COMPOSERS SUCH AS GLBTQA ARTISTS, WOMEN, AND PEOPLE OF COLOR.2. INFORMING AND EDUCATING OUR AUDIENCE ABOUT THE RELEVANCE OF THE MUSIC WE PERFORM. 3. AFFIRMING AND SHOWCASING THE TALENTS AND CAPABILITIES WITHIN THE GLBTQA COMMUNITY.4. SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF OTHER GLBTQA ORGANIZATIONS.5. CREATING HEALTHY SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO BE THEMSELVES SAFELY, OPENLY AND HONESTLY.The MPOs 2020-21 concert season provided performance opportunities to LGBTQ musicians through the pandemic, presented free concerts online that were attended by over 800 audience members from across the country, performed a world premiere commission, and performed works by LGBTQ, BIPOC, and women composers. The MPOs mission is to provide diverse arts entertainment of the highest quality, resulting in increased visibility for the musical talents of the GLBTQA community. That mission was critical in our 2020-2021 season, when the pandemic required musicians and the GLBTQ community to stay home to keep each other safe. Under the direction of Dr. Brian Dowdy, the MPO presented its first ever virtual season through its YouTube channel, presenting 3 major, pre-recorded concerts and 3 short, pop-up concerts for our audience. These performances included works by a diverse range of composers, including Libby Larsen, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and J.S. Bach. Over 800 people from across the country viewed MPO content and over 30 musicians participated in performing these works. This season kept our community connected and fulfilled our mission during a challenging year. The MPO also performed a world premiere of House of Circus, a work by Sahba Aminikia. The work was inspired by Sirkhane, a circus-school located that the Turkish-Syrian border that provides performance, learning, and healing opportunities for child refuges from the Syrian civil war. In partnership with Aminikia, the MPO presented that world premiere performance with a video from the students at Sirkhane. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the MPO had a successful financial year, raising donations from more supporters than in previous fiscal years and winning grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Xcel Energy Foundation, and Anna M. Heilmaier Foundation. The MPO also held a virtual fundraiser in February 2021 and raised funds nearly equivalent to the money raised in previous years. The 2020-2021 season has set up the MPO for success in continuing to fulfill its mission and provide diverse orchestral entertainment for musicians and community members alike.”
