Activity 2

Teaching - we trained new doctors in our clinics and the hospital preparing approximately 302 resident physicians for careers in many fields of medicine. Hfa physicians serve as faculty and most hold academic appointments at the university of minnesota medical school, where many have achieved distinction and have been recognized by students and peers alike for their outstanding skills as teachers. Hcmc currently offers eight free-standing residency programs that provide resident physicians with clinical experience in serving a broad mix of patients from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. The revenues and expenses associated with the day-to-day training and supervision of residents are difficult to separate from patient care services and thus included in 4a above.

Activity 3

Medical research - research activities on our campus are conducted through the minneapolis medical research foundation (mmrf), a related 501(c)(3) corporation. Hfa physicians contributed approximately 27,226 research hours to mmrf in 2011. There are active research programs in addiction medicine, cardio biomarkers, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, childhood asthma, chronic diseases, cognitive issues in aging/geriatrics, emergency medicine, gastrointestinal and liver disease, heart disease, hiv/aids, kidney disease, organ transplantation, orthopaedics and biomechanics, disease outcome and sleep disorders.
