Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the white bear area emergency food shelf is to provide food and support to our neighbors in need in the white bear lake area school district, including the cities of white bear lake, vadnais heights, lino lakes, hugo, north oaks, birchwood and white bear township. Each month the food shelf distributes over 50,000 pounds of food to 3,500 individuals. In 2016, the food shelf has seen a 14% increase in the need for food, due to unemployment, health crises, and healthcare expenses, and the rising cost of food.

Providing food and support to those in need since 1977, the white bear area emergency food shelf works toward increasing access to healthy food for all our neighbors in the white bear area. Programs include: monthly market, bonus friday, kid pack, mobile market, community resource support, and a family stability emergency fund.

IRS990/Desc0THE WHITE BEAR AREA EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF HAS BEEN SERVING THE WHITE BEAR LAKE COMMUNITY FOR 39 YEARS. IN 2016, WE PROVIDED 461,942 MEALS TO 3,420 INDIVIDUALS (UNDUPLICATED), A 14% INCREASE OVER INDIVIDUALS PROVIDED IN 2015. ON ANY GIVEN MONTH, OVER 590 FAMILIES RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM THE WHITE BEAR AREA EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF. OF THE INDIVIDUALS SERVED, 57% ARE CHILDREN AND 6% ARE SENIORS 65 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER.IN RECENT YEARS, WE HAVE EXPANDED OUR SERVICES AND STRENGTHENED OUR STRATEGIES TO MEET THE CHANGING NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY. CURRENT FOOD SUPPORT PROGRAMS INCLUDES: MONTHLY MARKET, BONUS FRIDAY, WEEKEND KID PACK, AND MOBILE MARKETS. OUR ROLE IN PROVIDING FOOD IS CRITICAL FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS AS THEY NEAVIAGE ISSUES WITH HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, CHILD CARE, EMPLOYMENT, AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS. WHILE WE WORK HARD TO PARTNER WITH OTHER LOCAL AREA RESOURCES TO HELP MEET THESE DEMANDS, THERE ARE OFTEN TIMES WHEN ADDITIONAL HELP IS NECESSARY. THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL CHURCES, COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND A GRANT FROM OTTO BREMER TRUST, THE WHITE BEAR AREA EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF HAS ESTABLISHED A FAMILY STABILITY EMERGENCY FUND, A FUND OF LAST RESORT TO ASSIST NEIGHBORS WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR BASIC NEEDS SUCH AS RENT, UTILITIES, MEDICINE, AND CAR REPAIRS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OUR ROLE IN PROVIDING FOOD IS CRITICAL FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS AS THEY NAVIGATE ISSUES WITH HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, CHILD CARE, EMPLOYMENT, AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS. WHILE WE WORK HARD TO PARTNER WITH OTHER LOCAL AREA RESOURCES TO HELP MEET THESE DEMANDS, THERE ARE OFTEN TIMES WHEN ADDITIONAL HELP IS NECESSARY. THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL CHURCHES, COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND A GRANT FROM OTTO BREMER TRUST, THE WHITE BEAR AREA EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF HAS ESTABLISHED A FAMILY STABILITY EMERGENCY FUND, A FUND OF LAST RESORT TO ASSIST NEIGHBORS WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR BASIC NEEDS SUCH AS RENT, UTILITIES, MEDICINE, AND CAR REPAIRS.
