Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.

Junior achievement of the upper midwest teaches students in grades k-12 about entrepreneurship, money management, how to be responsible consumers, workers and citizens, and provides them with the skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. Ja empowers students to make a connection between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world, thereby enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. Our relevant, experiential programs are offered at little or no cost to schools and align with national and local curriculum standards. Ja partners with more than 8,000 volunteers each year to teach our curriculum to local students. During the 2013-2014 school year, jaum impacted more than 153,000 students in minnesota, north dakota and western wisconsin.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1

The executive committee is made up of jaum board officers and vice chairs of jaum committee. The executive committee may act for the jaum board of directors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The form 990 is provided to the finance committee for review. After the finance committee reviews the form 990, the entire board will then proceed with their review process and approve the return.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The president and vp of finance and administration have responsibility for monitoring and enforcing its policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Junior achievement usa, inc. (jausa) and junior achievement of the upper midwest, inc. (jaum) utilize a pay structure designed by a company called equi-comp. Equi-comp pay ranges are benchmarked against the external labor market and are a source of comparable compensation data. Each year, jaum's board chair receives the equi-comp information from jausa that benchmarks the president's position and establishes a market-based compensation range. The board chair reviews this data and the organization's performance metrics, and in consultation with the executive committee, determines the annual salary of the president. The executive committee approves the final compensation package for the president. For all other positions, jaum uses equi-comp data provided by jausa, local benchmark data and employee performance information to determine compensation. For these positions, compensation is determined and approved by the jaum president in consultation with the senior leadership team.
