| EDUCATION/COMMUNITY OUTREACHIn 2015, ARC distributed 10,946 pieces of literature about animal issues to the public at 44 different large outreach events and gave out 3,856 samples of vegan food at 17 food sampling events. Community outreach activities ranged from informational booths and leafleting at large events such as the Twin Cities Pet Expo, Twin Cities Womens Expo, Twin Cities Pride Festival, Duluth Superior Pride, India Fest, Twin Cities Birth & Baby Expo, Healthy Life Expo, and the Minneapolis Tattoo Convention, to outreach at smaller scale events such as corporate health fairs, the Longevity Expo, the Wellness Expo, the Hip Hop Activism Conference, Food Day at the University of Minnesota, May Day Parade and Festival, Twin Cities Social Justice Arts Festival, and several neighborhood and school sustainability fairs, to leafleting with the ARC Outreach Team after concerts and large speaking events, to helping the hundreds of individuals who contacted us for assistance with everything from stopping trespassing by hunters to how to humanely remove mice from the workplace. The ARC Book Group held monthly discussion groups where participants discussed member-selected books about animal rights and other topical social justice issues. | $67,528 | - |
| ETHIQUE NOUVEAUARCs most ambitious outreach project is our all-vegan storefront, Ethique Nouveau. The store is completely animal-friendly and cruelty-free with many local, fair-trade, and organic products, and its one of the best ways we know to show people how easy it is to live compassionately and with awareness. The store not only provided a space where people could feel comfortable with their veganism, learn more about veganism, and find the products they want, but also proved to the larger community that a significant number of people want to use harm-free products made without the use of animal testing, ingredients, skins, or furs. The store allowed us to reach as many people as months of leafleting and to have one-on-one conversations with hundreds of customers curious about adopting a plant-based diet. Its a great, non-threatening form of outreach. In 2015, we started keeping track of the conversations we had with people about animal rights, veganism, and other issues related to animals. The numbers were amazing. They showed that, day in and day out, when people come into the storefront theyre interested in learning more, whether theyre already vegan, are interested in becoming vegan, or couldnt have cared less when they first came in. | $18,381 | - |
| CUDDLE COATSCuddle Coats educates the public about the cruelty of fur and encourages people to donate fur coats to aid orphaned and injured wildlife in their recovery at one of our many wildlife rehabilitation partner facilities. In 2015, in part thanks to a great story in the Huffington Post, our Cuddle Coats program took in 323 donated furs to be given back to the animals and were now up to over 60 wildlife rehabilitation partners that we supply with furs to use in their important life-saving work with injured and orphaned animals. | $2,152 | - |
| VEGAN UNIVERSITYVegan University is designed to help people adopt and maintain a plant-based diet in a way that works for them. New initiatives for Vegan University this year included weekend outreach at the Midtown Farmers Market, a well-received series of introductory plant-based cooking classes, a weekly e-newsletter containing an easy and affordable plant-based recipe, and an increased emphasis on cooperative efforts with local environmental organizations.Vegan University includes Vegan Grocery Shopping Tours of local co-ops and markets designed to teach people how to shop vegan; Help, Im Going Vegan; Plant-based Nutrition; and Vegan Meal Planning workshops, and a Vegan Mentor program. We also maintain the Vegan Community Circle Facebook group where people can discuss being vegan in a non-vegan world, and where we offer support and ideas to help people with challenges they might face in adopting a plant-based diet. In 2015, we gave 16 workshops about plant-based eating, 8 vegan grocery shopping tours, 11 introductory plant-based cooking classes, and our Vegan University mentor program had 14 active mentees. We held special events such as our 22nd Annual Turkey-free Healthy Harvest potluck dinner attended by approximately 160 people, an ExtraVEGANza event in partnership with Whole Foods, our annual Vegan Hot Dish Cook-Off competition, and our annual Global Vegan Waffle Party. We held 9 free screenings of films like Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives, and Peaceable Kingdom.Recognizing the intersectional nature of social justice movements, in 2015 Vegan University organized several events where ARC staff and volunteers packed vegan meals for the organization Feed My Starving Children, and we planned and served a vegan meal at a local homeless shelter. In addition, we made arrangements with a national vegan food manufacturer to collect proofs of purchase from their products and to exchange them for donations of vegan food to local food banks. | $1,091 | - |
| MINNESOTANS EXPOSING PETLAND CAMPAIGNThe Petland retail chain continues to encourage the breeding and selling of animals for profit. Were the Minnesota supporters of the national effort to persuade Petland to stop supporting puppy and kitten mills and selling live animals in their stores. In 2015, ARC held 13 demonstrations at Petland stores to educate the public about the problems inherent in selling animals for profit. We had over 2,000 conversations with individuals about buying from pet stores that don't sell live animals, the problem with treating living creatures as products, and the cruelty of the puppy, kitten, bird, and small animal industries. | $980 | - |
| PAY PER VIEWPay Per View is an innovative outreach strategy where people are paid $1.00 to watch a short video about the harsh reality of animal agriculture and then asked to decrease their consumption of animal products and work towards a vegan diet. In 2015, we had 195 powerful conversations with individuals at 5 different events and locations after they watched an impactful video through our Pay Per View program about the lives of animals used for food. | $275 | - |
| NO PAIN IN MY NAMENo Pain In My Name exposes Marilyn Carrolls experiments at the University of Minnesota in which she researches the effects of drug addiction by training monkeys and rats to self-administer drugs that humans misuse such as cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. The project gives voice to the community this research is supposedly benefiting: addicts and recovered addicts. In 2015 we held 2 demonstrations at the University of Minnesota against these cruel experiments. | $153 | - |
| MINNEAPOLIS VEGAN MEETUPMinneapolis Vegan Meetup organizes dineouts and other activities to promote a sense of community among people who want to enjoy life without eating or otherwise using animals. In 2015, we held 78 meetups, workshops, and other events through Minnesota Animal Rights Meetup and the meetup group has grown to 241 members. Examples of popular events included a speaker and discussion about the AETA at a local bookstore and an appearance by a local author to discuss her latest book about animal rights and atheism. | $147 | - |
| DEMONSTRATIONSWe held 2 demonstrations to protest the killing of Cecil the lion by a Minnesota dentist, one of which drew over 150 people and media coverage from many national and international outlets, 3 demonstrations outside the Renaissance Festival to protest their exotic animal rides, a Light the Path demonstration commemorating the birds killed due to Avian Flu outside of Chik Fil A, and a number of other demonstrations to educate the public about fur and the circus. | $27 | - |
| VEGKINSVegKins is a unique social networking program for families raising vegan children. This program offers the opportunity to come together to exchange ideas and information with other parents and build a community of parents raising compassionate kids. In 2015, we grew the VegKins program to 92 families and held 10 events including the VegKins spring egg hunt and parents dineouts. | $27 | - |
| NORTH VEGANSARCs North Vegans program offers free local outreach and meetups to residents of North Minneapolis. We believe that North Minneapolis and nearby areas deserve access to high-quality nutritious food, as well as a supportive and compassionate community. People do not need to be vegan to attend North Vegan events, only to be interested in a healthier lifestyle, a healthier family, and a kinder community. In 2015, North Vegans sponsored several Vegan Grocery Shopping on a Budget tours, had informational booths at Open Streets and Party in the Park neighborhood events, held several plant-based classes and neighborhood Earth Day and Holiday potlucks, held a childrens reading event at a local library, a film screening at a neighborhood church, and participated in a neighborhood cleanup and an All About Family barbeque competition with a vegan entry. | - | - |
| TEACHING COMPASSIONOur outreach program to schools, universities, and churches provides free presentations on a variety of animal-related topics such as our treatment of animals and relationship to animals, speciesism, sustainability, environmental destruction, and food justice to classrooms, assemblies, student groups, and gifted and talented programs. In 2015, we were invited to give 7 presentations at Normandale Community College, Southwest High School DeLaSalle High School, Parkway United Church of Christ, and Walker Church. The Dissection Choice component of Teaching Compassion provides information and assistance to students who choose not to dissect and information on alternatives to teachers at local high schools and colleges (over 50 so far). We put up posters near schools and youth centers with information about alternatives to dissection and how students can get support for their humane choice. New in 2015, we held several workshops to help activists be more effective for animals: Animal Activism and Facebook: How to Use Facebook Effectively for Animals, How to Answer Questions about Veganism Like a Pro, and Conflict Palm Oil and Circus Teach Ins. Our Humane Farming Myth brochure challenged the myth of humanely produced animal products and was a compelling resource to share with family and friends. We received requests from all over the country for quantities of this brochure. | - | - |
