IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0ENGLISH CLASSES The year 2011 saw an influx of students enter the classroom at Capitol Hill English School. Located near many apartment complexes and on the bus line, SeAM's English classes are gaining popularity. Each week over forty students attend classes, never leaving a dull moment. As an outreach site for the Hubbs Center and Saint Paul Public Schools, there are constantly new students coming and going. Jeanne Poepl returns for another year teaching the ever growing morning English class. It seems each week there is a new face adding to the already diverse group of students. Students come from many countries including Burma, China, Nepal, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Somalia and Mexico to name just a few. On an average week there is up to twenty students daily making the morning class the busiest of the three. In the fall of 2011, Capitol Hill English School added a third class in the afternoon. We welcome Mary Pat Davini as our afternoon teacher for our "English for Careers" class. Offering a curriculum specialized around career and job skills the class averages at least five students every day. Students learn how to fill out applications, read memos, practice basic math and money skills, and learn computer skills. This class is offered to assist SeAM's Refugee Employment Services clients get ready for the job market. What a tremendous asset for the future of the school and for the students! The evening class, taught by Tom Thompson, serves as an advanced class for students who work during the day. The class meets Tuesday nights and is comprised of mostly Karen students from Burma interested in improving their English while working fulltime. Carolyn West is a second-year volunteer with this evening class. With the expansion of another class and the growing number of students, 2011 has been one of the biggest years recently for the school. It could not have run as smooth as it did without the help of the volunteers and teachers. Our volunteers have made a tremendous influence on the lives of the students both in and outside the classroom. Thank you to everyone that participated in making it a successful year full of great memories.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1ELDER PROGRAMS Elder Programs have continued to grow and thrive this year. The aim is to combat depression and isolation among older Cambodian, Hmong and Karen refugees. SeAM provides programming, transportation, meals and educational resources to these groups. The Hmong Elder Program meets Monday mornings in First Lutheran Church on St. Paul's east side. Activities include playing bingo, English class, holiday celebrations, educational presentations and field trips, just to name a few. Some field trip highlights include a trip to Gerten's Nursery and to volunteer Sue Warren's farm. Over the past year the program has seen over thirty different individuals with more coming each week. Led by volunteer and SeAM board member Dianne Anderson, the Hmong Elder program had an exciting and eventful year. Every Thursday morning, the Cambodian Elder Program meets at Christ Lutheran Church. Over 70 participants attended the program this past year with an average of 45 showing up each week. Continuing our partnership with Wilder Foundation, the Cambodian Elder Program offers an opportunity for education, community building and socializing. We continue to focus on healthy lifestyles promoting exercise and healthy eating habits. This year we celebrated Thanksgiving with a meal and entertainment provided by the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Volunteer groups from Faith Lutheran Church, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and King of Kings Lutheran Church come monthly to interact with the elders and serve lunch. Twice each month, the Karen Elder Program meets at MORE Multicultural School for Empowerment on Wheelock Parkway. SeAM partners with MORE School to make this mental health focused program a success. Over 25 people attended in 2011, with the demand ever increasing. Participants are picked up in a Lyngblomsten van by a volunteer driver every other Friday. Elders do crafts, sing, discuss mental health issues, and learn about healthy lifestyles. This year we had over fifty volunteers help out at our Elder Programs. Volunteers are a valuable part of SeAM's programming, offering cross-cultural friendship and cultural sharing. SeAM's ability to provide these programs has made a tremendous influence on the lives of the older refugees and their families.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom2PARISH NURSE PROGRAM KAREN PARISH NURSE: Roi Aung Saga, RN As a Parish Nurse, I'm trying to give Health Education for Hypertension, Diabetes, and Nutrition as much as I can do in this community. At the same time, I'm trying to connect the new arrivals to resources like SeAM and FBC- First Baptist Church in St. Paul) with Baby Celebration, Quilt distribution, and SeAM's Christmas Friendship Program. In 2011, I offered blood pressure check at FBC once a month and every other Friday meeting of Karen Elders Program at MORE (Multicultural Empowerment School in St. Paul). Three times of Health Education for Hypertension were coordinated with KOM (Karen Organization of Minnesota) for new arrivals. Also, I coordinate with other volunteers for distribution of supplemental food package from Second Harvest to some elders. During these times, I try to find appropriate information/resources for new arrivals and elders who need nutrition, hypertension, and diabetes education. In 2011, three "Baby Celebration" were held in FBC: Feb 29, June 25 and October 29. Twenty to thirty mothers attended in each event. Over sixty new arrival families (who arrive to MN less than 18 months) got warm blankets from SeAM's Quilt Distribution and received gifts through SeAM's Christmas Friendship Program. I will continue to do all above things in 2012. Thank you very much for helping and sharing your blessing with this Parish Nurse Program. HMONG PARISH NURSE: Douangta Vang-Sitcler, RN, PHN Home visiting, listening, health teaching, assisting with basic needs, and helping with important paperwork not only decreases stress for the clients but also educates them about how to access resources and about the American health system. Here is a sampling of how I helped clients in 2011: Helping clients access and utilize the health care system helps in disease prevention and management. Helping clients manage medical paperwork helps in maintaining compliance with medical care. Providing information about healthy lifestyle and nutrition choices empowers clients to make decisions that affect their health. Clients who have not experienced health complications become aware of the causes for heart disease and diabetes. Clients who already have these chronic diseases become aware of how to manage and prevent further complications by modifying their lifestyle choices and making seeking medical care a priority. Clients also become more knowledgeable of their own body's signs and symptoms and understand when to seek emergency care. Overall, through the 70-80 home visits that I made this past year my clients have increased their connection to community resources. They have changed their lifestyles and made more informed decisions regarding their health. With my help, they are also more assertive, know more about their health, and can better voice their concern and questions to their medical providers, doctors, and nurses.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom3EMPLOYMENT SERVICES 2011 was the second year that SeAM offered employment services through a contract with Minnesota Department of Human Services. In consortium with Disabled Immigrant Association (DIA) of Minneapolis, SeAM worked with over 75 clients throughout the year to prepare for employment and search for jobs. A dozen clients found jobs in the packaging industry. Several others were placed in meat processing plants and a large bakery. As per regulations through the US Office for Refugee Resettlement, SeAM is only allowed to work with refugees who have lived in the country for less than 365 days. This presents many challenges, including language barrier, job experience, and transportation. Most refugees are still learning basic English during their first year in the US and rarely have the financial or linguistic ability to learn how to drive and acquire a driver's license or car.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom4QUILT DISTRIBUTION In and out. In and out. SeAM's quilt closet seems to be a revolving door year round. This past year SeAM received and distributed over 733 donated quilts to new arrivals. A vast majority of newly arrived refugees that have walked through our doors were Karen families from Burma. SeAM is gracious for all of the volunteers who made and delivered the quilts this year. The demand for quilts and blankets is always there-year round. We appreciate your hard work and dedication to this important ministry of SeAM.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom5CHRISTMAS FRIENDSHIP The Christmas Friendship Program was a big success during the holiday weeks. There were 60 refugee families matched this year with 25 various individuals, congregations and businesses that sponsored families. Families that were not matched were given cloth bags filled with personal items, gift cards, hats and mittens. SeAM distributed 75 cloth bags to those families who were not part of the Christmas Friendship program or refugees who arrived in Minnesota in late December. Many volunteers have told us that they will never forget the look and smiles on the faces of the families receiving gifts, especially those of children. Thank you to everyone who sponsored families translated and helped out with the program. It could not have been successful without all of your help.
