IRS990/Desc0Itasca Climate Dialogue: Eighteen Itasca County citizens met at the Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids, Minnesota each day from 8:30am to 5:00pm, starting Thursday, May 14th and concluding Saturday, May 16th, to study and discuss local climate and weather issues. Participants were randomly selected and stratified to include a balanced representation of the Itasca County population. All were paid $375 plus expenses for the three days. The group was tasked with deciding how the Itasca region could best adapt to future extreme weather and a changing climate in order to remain a healthy, resilient, and prosperous community. To respond to this charge, community panelists identified and prioritized significant challenges to the long-term prosperity of the community, opportunities to respond to those challenges, and individual and community actions to directly address challenges or realize opportunities. Outcomes were based on information provided by experts and the collective wisdom of the group. Check out those challenges, opportunities, individual actions, community actions, and key weather information along with other important outcomes from the three days on our website and in the full summary report.TWIN CITIES WORLD WIDE VIEWS ON CLIMATE & ENERGY: In early June, we hosted a diverse group of 70 Twin Cities residents to deliberate about the earths changing climate. Our event in Saint Paul was one of 97 global host sites in the international World Wide Views on Climate & Energy project. Participants at each host site considered the global impacts of a changing climate and a quickly evolving energy system to provide recommendations for national policymakers at the United Nations. Results from each site (other U.S. sites include Boston, MA; Fort Collins, CO; and Phoenix, AZ) will be compiled and presented at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris this December.PATIENT PARTICIPATION IN REDUCING DIAGNOSTIC ERROR: The health field requires patient-focused strategies to reduce diagnostic error, improve health, and save lives. Diagnostic error, or diagnoses that are wrong, missed, or delayed, is a serious issue in inpatient and outpatient settings. Most proposals to improve diagnostic quality focus on physicians and healthcare systems; few engage patients the consumers of healthcare services in preventing, identifying, and reporting diagnostic error. In conjunction with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM), well use Citizens Juries to engage healthcare consumers and professionals in developing informed and practical patient-focused strategies for reducing diagnostic error. The project features an iterative series of deliberative events. A citizens jury of healthcare consumers was convened for two 3-day sessions in August and October, 2015. This jury recommended strategies patients could pursue to reduce errors in diagnosis, incorporating input from healthcare professionals. They also identified potential obstacles to those strategies and remedies health systems could implement to support productive patient-doctor relationships.
