Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Feed those in need, house those experiencing homelessness, and empower individuals to achieve independence.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Food centreour food centre is located at 714 park ave. In downtown minneapolis and is open everyday of the year. Volunteers and staff prepare and serve hot, nutritious meals. Two breakfasts are served, one to our resident/clients and a second one to women with children or men with children. During the noon meal, which is open to the general public, we generally serve about 350 guests. We have a "no questions asked" philosophy about feeding the hungry - we serve anyone in need of a meal. We strive to create a safe and respectful environment to ensure our guests' comfort. The food centre served a total of 143,996 meals in the fiscal year.
Activity 3
Day by day outpatient program:day by day program is an outpatient treatment program for men and women ages 18 and older, who have a history of substance abuse. Individuals who enter our program must be willing to make the necessary changes to become productive members of the community.historically, many of our day by day clients have spent time on the streets, were in gangs or served time in prison. Others had families and stable jobs. Regardless of their circumstances, their addiction to drugs and alcohol has affected their health, made them homeless or in danger of being homeless. (statement continues on schedule o)our program is built around the philosophy of responsibility and reflection. The services provide a safe place to build self-esteem, make positive changes, and learn to live a sober life. We offer an array of therapeutic services to day by day clients. For men, the treatment program will follow a series of stages in an outpatient setting, with housing available. The women's program will use a unique program to meet their special needs, including a trauma group that promotes a strength-based approach where awareness of trauma as a trigger helps them to develop coping mechanisms. Clients will be encouraged to follow a structured treatment program and participate in relapse prevention group as well as outside meetings in the community. The day by day program provides residents with the opportunity to look at their past behaviors and, upon awareness, helps them to make the appropriate changes in their lives. Day by day provided services for 171 men and women.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0SINCE 1953 HOUSE OF CHARITY HAS BEEN SERVING PEOPLE IN NEED. WHAT BEGAN AS A MISSION FOR THE DOWN-AND-OUT OF MINNEAPOLIS HAS EXPANDED TO SERVE THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS FROM ACROSS THE TWIN CITIES. ORIGINALLY LOCATED ON NICOLLET ISLAND, THE ORGANIZATION MOVED TO VARIOUS SITES BEFORE LANDING AT ITS CURRENT SITE IN DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS IN 1976. 56 YEARS AGO ONE PERSON RECOGNIZED A NEED IN THE COMMUNITY AND FELT COMPELLED TO HELP. THAT PERSON WAS TOM KONDRAK, BETTER KNOWN AS BROTHER DE PAUL. AS A YOUNG MAN HE SAW POVERTY ALL AROUND HIM. WITH VERY LITTLE MONEY, BROTHER DE PAUL SET OUT ON THE SELFLESS MISSION OF PROVIDING FOOD AND SHELTER TO PEOPLE IN NEED. A TRULY COMPASSIONATE MAN, HE HAS DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF OTHERS. TODAY WE STRIVE TO MAINTAIN BROTHER DE PAUL'S VISION. IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE, BUT ALSO AN HONOR. HOUSE OF CHARITY HAS BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE SUCH STRONG AND GENEROUS SUPPORTERS. IN 1998 WE COMPLETED A $2.5 MILLION RENOVATION THAT ENABLED US TO EXPAND OUR PROGRAMS WHILE CONTINUING TO DELIVER QUALITY SERVICES. OUR BOARD MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO OUR SUCCESS THROUGH THEIR STRONG LEADERSHIP. WE TRULY APPRECIATE THE COMMITMENT THEY, ALONG WITH OUR DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS, SHOW HOUSE OF CHARITY. WE HAVE MADE MANY CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, BUT WE HAVE ALWAYS REMAINED DEDICATED TO HELPING THOSE MOST IN NEED, ESPECIALLY THE HOMELESS AND INNER CITY POOR. OUR ARRAY OF PROGRAMS ENABLE INDIVIDUALS TO SUCCEED BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY. HOUSE OF CHARITY OFFERS TRUE HOPE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW.
