Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Minnesota Statute 290.05, but is subject to income tax on unrelated business income. The Organization generates unrelated business tax income from the sale of advertising and mailing lists. The amounts owed for federal and state unrelated business income tax were $799 and $1,969 in 2024 and 2023, respectively. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is included in these financial statements. Because the Organization is a public charity, contributions may qualify for tax deductions by the contributors. Management believes that it is not reasonably possible for any tax position benefits to increase or decrease significantly over the next 12 months. As of December 31, 2024 and 2023, there were no income tax related accrued interest or penalties recognized in either the statement of financial position or in the statement of activities. The Organization files informational returns in the U.S. federal and in the Minnesota state jurisdictions. U.S. federal returns and Minnesota returns prior to fiscal year 2020 are closed. No returns are currently under examination in any tax jurisdiction.

A total of 283 articles were published. The journal issues were provided to 2,303 active members in 2024. NCFR journal articles reached readers in 217 countries with around 1.4 million views across the three journals. NCFR created and published two policy briefs in 2024, titled Reducing the Digital Divide for Families: State and Local Policy Opportunities and The Role of Taxation in Family Inequality: Possibilities for Reform. The briefs were disseminated to state policymakers and NCFR members who are encouraged to share with others. The NCFR website provides curated resources to disseminate NCFR's policy-related activities, and a description of NCFR's policy-related activities. Additional research and policy briefs were in production at the end of 2024.In 2024, NCFR created one new resource collection, Public Scholarship Harassment Resources, and updated the Immigration and Families collection to include practitioner and policy implications, for review by internal audiences. Additional resources are continuously added to previous resource collections. Resource collections are a method to disseminate research such as NCFR journal articles, webinars, conference recordings, articles from NCFR Report and CFLE Network, and occasionally outside resources. NCFR offered Teaching Tuesdays for a second year. Teaching Tuesdays are an interactive event for NCFR members to learn and discuss academic pedagogy. Four Teaching Tuesdays were held during 2024. Events were titled: Using Reflexive Pedagogy to Enhance Student Learning, The Need for Cultural Humility in Classrooms, Visual Thinking Strategies, and Teaching Family Life Education Methodology. These free events averaged 38 registrants and 16 participants per event. NCFR published four issues each of its NCFR Report member magazine (containing Family Focus articles), and CFLE Network newsletter, which contain educational articles and resources for members and CFLEs pertaining to their professional interest areas. NCFR's weekly email newsletter "Zippy News" provides announcements about educational and professional opportunities in the family field.
