Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Peter gerl and william gerl jr are brothers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Prior to filing the federal tax returns form 990 and 990-t with the internal revenue service both the finance committee also serving the role of the organization's audit committee and board of directors are provided with copies of the return. This provides an opportunity to review, discuss, and approve the current tax returns prior to the actual filing date.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

On an annual basis, all board/committee members and employees of whitetails unlimited are required to review the conflict of interest policy and each individual shall disclose to the organization any personal interest which he or she may have in any matter pending before the organization and shall refrain from participation in any decision on such matter. They must also review a copy of the employee personnel policies which include the whistleblower policy and the organization's code of conduct policy. All employees are required to sign and date a confirmation following review and this is placed in their employee file.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The finance committee is in charge of researching data during their compensation study to comfirm that the current compensation (salary & benefits) of the executive director (and other officers and key employees) is fair and reasonable. The data compiled during the annual study includes the following: 1.) information obtained from the irs form 990 filings of similar conservation organizations. 2.) u.s. Bureau of labor statistics. 3.) two other national salary and compensations studies conducted by independent sources. Their conclusion is submitted to the board of directors. In addition, employee performance evaluations are conducted on all employees of the organization. All wage increase recommendations must be formally approved by the board of directors. Historically, annual wage increases have been tied to the consumer price index as a primary reference.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18

Copies of all irs forms including form's 990 and 990-t, are kept at the corporate headquarters in sturgeon bay, wi and are available to members and the general public during standard business hours. Copies are also available upon request for a nominal fee to cover printing and postage expense.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and current financial statements are available to members and the general public during standard business hours.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0THE 3 R'S PROGRAMTO ENGAGE THE NEXT GENERATIONS OF HUNTERS, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED HAS CREATED A TEACHING AID TITLED DEER HUNTING - NEXT GENERATION THAT FOCUSES ON THE 3 R'S OF HUNTING: RECRUIT, RETAIN, AND REACTIVATE. THE MAJORITY OF THE BOOKLETS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT ALL OF OUR EVENTS TAKING PLACE DURING THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR. THE REMAINDER WILL BE AVAILABLE AT NO-CHARGE, THROUGH WTU'S NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS.THE NEED TO RECRUIT NEW HUNTERS IS CRITICAL TO THE SPORT OF REGULATED HUNTING. THE MONEY FROM HUNTING LICENSES HELPS STATE FISH & WILDLIFE DEPARTMENTS PAY FOR CONSERVATION PROJECTS AS WELL AS LAW ENFORCEMENT, HUNTER EDUCATION, AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE BEST WAY TO RECRUIT A NEW HUNTER IS TO OFFER NOVICES A DAY AT THE RANGE, TAKE THEM SMALL GAME HUNTING, LOAN THEM GEAR AND EQUIPMENT UNTIL THEY DECIDE WHAT TO BUY FOR THEMSELVES. TEACH THEM SAFETY, ETHICS, AND HUNTING SKILLS, AND HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR FUTURE HUNTING GOALS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1HOPE FOR WILDLIFE PROGRAM CREATING AND MANAGING QUALITY WILDLIFE HABITAT AND ACCESS TO PUBLIC PROPERTY ARE TOP PRIORITIES OF WHITETAILS UNLIMITED AND THEY ARE BEING ADDRESSED CURRENTLY THROUGH OUR HOPE (HABITAT OPTIONS & PLANNED ENHANCEMENT) FOR WILDLIFE PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM STRENGTHENS RELATIONSHIPS WITH PRIVATE LANDOWNERS WHO PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES AND DEER MANAGEMENT OPTIONS. HOPE FOR WILDLIFE ALSO CREATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH STATE AND FEDERAL RESOURCE AGENCIES TO ACQUIRE LAND AND THEREBY INCREASE PUBLIC HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES, AND ENHANCE CRITICAL HABITAT FOR WHITE-TAILED DEER AND NUMEROUS OTHER WILDLIFE SPECIES. AS A SAFEGUARD TOWARDS OUR INVESTMENT IN WILDLIFE, WE ALSO PROVIDE MEASURES THAT COMBAT THE SERIOUS CRIME OF POACHING.ADOPT-A-TEAM PROGRAMWHITETAILS UNLIMITED IMPLEMENTED THE WTU ADOPT-A-TEAM INITIATIVE, TO HELP FUND PERMANENT ENDOWMENTS FOR SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAMS AT HIGH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT WTU'S CHAPTER BASE AND MEMBERSHIP DEMOGRAPHICS. THE PROGRAM FOSTERS WTU'S MISSION OF PRESERVING THE HUNTING TRADITION BY ACTIVELY INVOLVING OUR NATION'S YOUTH IN THE SHOOTING SPORTS AND HOPEFULLY SOMEDAY PARTICIPANTS WILL ENGAGE IN REGULATED HUNTING. FOR ADMINISTRATIVE PURPOSES AND ONCE THE COMMITMENT IS MADE, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED WILL ISSUE A GRANT TO THE MIDWAY USA FOUNDATION IN THE NAME OF THE SHOOTING ENTITY. THE ADOPT A-TEAM ENDOWMENT ACCOUNT IS ADMINISTERED BY THE FOUNDATION.DEER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM WTU'S DEER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM IS AIMED AT PROVIDING LANDOWNERS WITH A BACKGROUND ON THE HISTORY OF WHITETAIL DEER MANAGEMENT, ECOLOGY, AND THEIR UNIQUE HABITATS. THE PROGRAM ALSO FOCUSES ON THE WHITETAIL, AND ENCOMPASSES ASPECTS OF VARIOUS CURRENTLY PRACTICED DEER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THE PROGRAM HAS EXPERIENCED A TREMENDOUS RESPONSE FROM OUR NATION'S PRIVATE LANDOWNERS. AN EXTREMELY POPULAR COMPONENT OF THE PROGRAM IS OUR CUSTOM 2-COLOR PROPERTY BOUNDARY SIGN THAT PUBLICLY DISPLAY THE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CURRENTLY BEING PRACTICED BY THAT PARTICULAR LANDOWNER. WTU'S LATEST BOOKLET TITLED DEER MANAGEMENT PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOPICS AND TECHNIQUES INVOLVED WITH TURNING YOUR LAND INTO A MORE ATTRACTIVE HABITAT FOR WILDLIFE, AND HOW YOU CAN BEGIN A MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR WHITE-TAILED DEER. DREAM SHEDS II PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED HAS BEEN SOLICITED BY COUNTLESS ORGANIZATIONS AND FAMILIES, ASKING IF WHITETAILS UNLIMITED OFFERS ANY ASSISTANCE TOWARDS HUNTING AND FISHING EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING MEDICAL CONDITIONS.
