Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Peter gerl and william gerl jr are brothers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Prior to filing the federal tax returns form 990 and 990-t with the internal revenue service both the finance committee also serving the role of the organization's audit committee and board of directors are provided with copies of the return. This provides an opportunity to review, discuss, and approve the current tax returns prior to the actual filing date.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

On an annual basis, all board/committee members and employees of whitetails unlimited are required to review the conflict of interest policy and each individual shall disclose to the organization any personal interest which he or she may have in any matter pending before the organization and shall refrain from participation in any decision on such matter. They must also review a copy of the employee personnel policies which include the whistleblower policy and the organization's code of conduct policy. All employees are required to sign and date a confirmation following review and this is placed in their employee file.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The finance committee is in charge of researching data during their compensation study to comfirm that the current compensation (salary & benefits) of the executivce director (and other officers and key employees) is fair and reasonable. The data compiled during the annual study includes the following: 1.) information obtained from the irs form 990 filings of similar conservation organizations. 2.) u.s. Bureau of labor statistics. 3.) two other national salary and compensations studies conducted by independent sources. Their conclusion is submitted to the board of directors. In addition, employee performance evaluations are conducted on all employees of the organization. All wage increase recommendations must be formally approved by the board of directors. Historically, annual wage increases have been tied to the consumer price index as a primary reference.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18

Copies of form 990 are available for viewing in a machine-readable format through amazon web services (aws). The data includes form 990 and related schedules. Copies may also be viewed free of charge on the irs website by doing a tax exempt organization search. Note: copies are also available on a usb thumb drive from the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has created a finance committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of independent accountant.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Permanent collection consists of artwork, historical objects and other items of continuing value and interest. These items are recorded at fair value at the date of donation or original cost, if purchased.

PART X, LINE 2:

Whitetails unlimited, inc. Is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business taxable income (ubti). In addition, the organization qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under section 170(b)(1)(a) and has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under section 509(a)(2). The organization is also exempt from wisconsin income taxes. Accounting standards codification (asc) 740-10 on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the organization and various positions related to the potential sources of ubti. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization accounts for any interest and penalties related to irs assessments as income tax expense. Penalties and interest assessed by income taxing authorities are included in management and general expenses, if applicable. The organization had no interest and penalties related to income taxes for the year ended june 30, 2018 and 2017. The organization's federal returns are subject to examination generally for 3 years after they are filed and its state returns are subject to examination generally for four years after they are filed

TO ANSWER THE CALL, WE DEVELOPED AN INITIATIVE THAT WOULD FOSTER OUR MISSION AND BE SUPPORTED AT THE LOCAL LEVEL BY OUR MEMBERSHIP. IN 2015, WE CREATED DREAM SHEDS AND ENLISTED THE ASSISTANCE OF DRURY OUTDOORS TO DONATE THE SHED ANTLERS FOR THE PROGRAM. ANY CHILD, 18 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER, WHO IS A UNITED STATES OR CANADIAN CITIZEN, HAS A QUALIFYING PHYSICIAN-CERTIFIED LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS, AND HAS NOT IN THE PAST HAD ANOTHER HUNTING OR FISHING REQUEST GRANTED, IS ELIGIBLE FOR PARTICIPANT CONSIDERATION. OUR UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH CATCH-A-DREAM PROVIDES THE LINK TO AN ORGANIZATION THAT OVER THE PAST SEVENTEEN YEARS HAVE MADE 637 DREAMS COME TRUE. HUNT FOR THE HUNGRY INITIATIVE - WHITETAILS UNLIMITED IS A STRONG SUPPORTER OF HUNTER DONATIONS TO FOOD PANTRIES, AND HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN BOTH FINANCING AND EXPANDING PROGRAMS IN MANY STATES. EACH HUNTING SEASON, WTU ENCOURAGES MEMBERS AND HUNTERS TO DONATE VENISON THEY CANNOT USE PERSONALLY TO FOOD PANTRIES IN THEIR LOCAL AREA. THE DONATED VENISON PROVIDES THOUSANDS OF MEALS TO THE LESS FORTUNATE. OUR HUNT FOR THE HUNGRY INITIATIVE ADVOCATES THE MESSAGE TO OUR MEMBERSHIP AND ALSO PARTNERS WITH OTHER GROUPS LIKE FARMERS AND HUNTERS FEEDING THE HUNGRY SHARE THE HARVEST, SPORTSMEN AGAINST HUNGER AND OTHERS. FARMERS AND HUNTERS FEEDING THE HUNGRY ALONE DISTRIBUTED 782,000 SERVINGS OF NUTRITIOUS VENISON FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND CHILDREN IN NEED DURING THIS
