Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Peter gerl and william gerl jr are brothers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

Before the tax return form 990 is filed with the irs, the organization's governing body has a corporate meeting at headquarters to review and discuss the current tax return.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Business relationships between outside interests and the organization's board of directors are constantly scrutinized to insure that there is not a conflict of interest. Based on the relatively small number of directors there is a continual review of business relationships.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

To determine a competitive level of compensation, the annual review process includes; 1.) a written performance evaluation, 2.) analysis of reputable salary survey sources to gather comparative data on various not-for-profit organizations including: geographic location, size, and charitable mission, 3.) formal approval by the executive board of directors. The organization does not have an independent committee review its compensation levels. Annual performance reviews/wage increase recommendations are approved by the board of directors. Generally the annual wage increases have been tied to the consumer price index as a primary reference.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

All governing documents, policies and audited financial statements are kept at corporate headquarters in sturgeon bay, wi and are available to members and the public during general business hours. Copies are also available upon request for a nominal fee to cover printing and postage expense.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Whitetails unlimited, inc. Is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business taxable income (ubti). In addition, the organization qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under section 170(b)(1)(a) and has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under section 509(a)(2). The organization is also exempt from wisconsin income taxes. Accounting standards codification (asc) 740-10 on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the organization and various positions related to the potential sources of ubti. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization accounts for any interest and penalties related to irs assessments as income tax expense. Penalties and interest assessed by income taxing authorities are included in management and general expenses, if applicable. The organization had no interest and penalties related to income taxes for the year ended june 30, 2014 and 2013. The organization's federal returns are subject to examination generally for 3 years after they are filed and its state returns are subject to examination generally for four years after they are filed

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PRESERVING THE HUNTING TRADITION - SINCE OUR FOUNDING IN 1982, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT, PROTECTING THE HUNTER'S RIGHTS, AND PROMOTING THE SPORT OF REGULATED HUNTING. ACCEPTANCE OF HUNTING AS A LEGITIMATE FORM OF RECREATION CONTINUES TO GROW, DESPITE RECENT MEDIA STORIES TO THE CONTRARY. WHITETAILS UNLIMITED IS WORKING DAILY TO COMBAT THESE PUBLIC MISCONCEPTIONS AND PRESERVE THE HUNTING TRADITION FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. FOR OVER THREE DECADES, WE HAVE SERVED THE NEEDS OF AMERICA'S 55,000 VOLUNTEER HUNTER EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS, FACED WITH THE CHALLENGE OF TEACHING OUR CHILDREN SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE HUNTING SKILLS. STATE HUNTER EDUCATION COURSES ARE MANDATED, HOWEVER, DRASTIC WILDLIFE AGENCY BUDGET CUTS LIMIT THE FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR HUNTER EDUCATION MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT. WHITETAILS UNLIMITED FILLS THAT FINANCIAL VOID BY PROVIDING GRANTS TO LOCAL HUNTER EDUCATION COURSES. AS HUNTERS, OUR DEER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM IS BACKED BY OVER SEVENTY YEARS OF RESEARCH, SUPPORTING REGULATED HUNTING AS THE MOST VIABLE OPTION STATE WILDLIFE AGENCIES HAVE TO CONTROL AND PROPERLY MANAGE DEER POPULATIONS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0STAYING ON TARGET PROGRAM -OUR STAYING ON TARGET PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO GET OUR NATION'S YOUTH OUT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS AND INTRODUCE THEM TO THE SHOOTING SPORTS. CURRENTLY WE OFFER TWO PROGRAMS THAT DO JUST THAT; OUR "3 IN THE RED" FIREARM PROGRAM AND "THREE FOR THREE" ARCHERY PROGRAM. RECENT STUDIES INDICATE THAT THE MAJORITY OF PARTICIPANTS SAID THAT THEY WOULD LIKELY CONTINUE PARTICIPATING IN A GIVEN DISCIPLINE OF THE SHOOTING SPORTS. WHITETAILS UNLIMITED HAS A LONG HISTORY OF RECRUITING AND DEVELOPING NEW HUNTERS AND PARTICIPANTS IN THE SHOOTING SPORTS, AND OUR STAYING ON TARGET PROGRAM IS A CONTINUATION OF OUR STRATEGY TO CONTINUE PRESERVING AN AMERICAN TRADITION AND PRESERVE THE HUNTING TRADITION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0WHITETAIL WATCH - A PROGRAM CREATED BY WHITETAILS UNLIMITED TO HELP CURB THE CRIME OF POACHING ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. WHITETAIL WATCH COMPONENTS INCLUDE BOUNDARY PROPERTY SIGNS, WALLET CARDS, AND DECALS AS VISIBLE REMINDERS TO POACHERS THAT LOCAL CITIZENS ARE ON THE WATCH AND WILL REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY. WHITETAIL WATCH, A LONGSTANDING WTU PROGRAM, ALREADY HAS ACTIVE PROGRAMS WITH COMPONENTS THAT PROVIDE CONTACT INFORMATION FOR TIP LINES IN NINE STATES (ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MICHIGAN, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, AND WISCONSIN).THE SIGN ENCOURAGES ANYONE WHO SEES SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO REPORT IT TO THEIR PROPER WILDLIFE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY. THE ACT OF POACHING STEALS FROM ALL CITIZENS, DAMAGES OUR NATURAL RESOURCES, AND CASTS A NEGATIVE LIGHT ON THE SPORT OF REGULATED HUNTING. PROJECT POLITE - ACCESS TO PRIVATE PROPERTY OVER TWO DECADES AGO, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED DEVELOPED A VERY SUCCESSFUL PUBLIC RELATIONS PROGRAM, IN AN ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS CONFRONTING REGULATED HUNTING - ACCESS TO PRIVATE PROPERTY! IN AN EFFORT TO SOLVE THIS DILEMMA A PROGRAM TITLED PROJECT POLITE, AN ACRONYM FOR PERMISSION OF LANDOWNER IN ORDER TO ENTER WAS CREATED AND UNVEILED TO AMERICA'S HUNTING FRATERNITY. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF THREE MAJOR COMPONENTS: WTU HUNTER-LANDOWNER ID CARDS, COMPLIMENTARY HUNTING WITH PERMISSION SIGNS, AND A VARIETY OF HIGHLY VISIBLE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS. THE MOTIVATION FOR THIS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM EVOLVED FROM THE FACT THAT OVER SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF OUR NATION'S PRIME WILDLIFE HABITATS ARE IN THE HANDS OF THE PRIVATE LANDOWNER. CONSIDERING THAT FIGURE ALONE, IT'S OBVIOUS THAT GOOD RELATIONS MUST CONTINUE TO BE FOSTERED BETWEEN THE HUNTER AND THE PRIVATE LANDOWNER. WHEN YOU COMBINE PROPER IDENTIFICATION WITH A PERSONAL, POLITE REQUEST TO HUNT A PERSON'S PROPERTY, DOORS START OPENING TO NEW HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES.HUNT FOR THE HUNGRY INITIATIVE - WHITETAILS UNLIMITED IS A STRONG SUPPORTER OF HUNTER DONATIONS TO FOOD PANTRIES, AND HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN BOTH FINANCING AND EXPANDING PROGRAMS IN MANY STATES. EACH HUNTING SEASON, WTU ENCOURAGES MEMBERS AND HUNTERS TO DONATE VENISON THEY CANNOT USE PERSONALLY TO FOOD PANTRIES IN THEIR LOCAL AREA. THE DONATED VENISON PROVIDES THOUSANDS OF MEALS TO THE LESS FORTUNATE. OUR HUNT FOR THE HUNGRY INITIATIVE ADVOCATES THE MESSAGE TO OUR MEMBERSHIP AND ALSO PARTNERS WITH OTHER GROUPS LIKE SHARE THE HARVEST, SPORTSMEN AGAINST HUNGER AND OTHERS. THESE PROGRAMS PROVIDE A VALUABLE SERVICE TO MANY COMMUNITIES, AND ARE AN EASY WAY FOR HUNTERS TO HELP OUT WHILE THEY PARTICIPATE IN THE SPORT OF REGULATED HUNTING. IF YOU GET YOUR DEER EARLY IN THE SEASON AND STILL WANT TO HUNT, TAKING ANOTHER DEER TO DONATE TO A FOOD PANTRY IS A GREAT WAY TO EXTEND THE SEASON. ADOPT-A-TEAM PROGRAM - WHITETAILS UNLIMITED IMPLEMENTED THE WTU ADOPT-A-TEAM INITIATIVE, TO HELP FUND PERMANENT ENDOWMENTS FOR SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAMS AT HIGH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT WTU'S CHAPTER BASE AND MEMBERSHIP DEMOGRAPHICS. THIS PROGRAM FOSTERS WTU'S MISSION OF PRESERVING THE HUNTING TRADITION BY ACTIVELY INVOLVING OUR NATION'S YOUTH IN THE SHOOTING SPORTS AND HOPEFULLY SOME DAY THEY WILL CONSIDERED THE SPORT OF REGULATED HUNTING. FOR ADMINISTRATIVE PURPOSES AND ONCE THE COMMITMENT IS MADE, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED WILL PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE MIDWAY USA FOUNDATION IN THE NAME OF THE SHOOTING ENTITY. THE ACTUAL ENDOWMENT ACCOUNT IS ADMINISTERED BY THE FOUNDATION.HOPE FOR WILDLIFE PROGRAM - WHEN IT COMES TO OFFERING NUMEROUS BENEFITS FROM A SINGLE PARCEL OF LAND, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED'S HOPE FOR WILDLIFE PROGRAM (HABITAT OPTIONS & PLANNED ENHANCEMENT), IS CENTERED ON THE CONCEPT OF HABITAT BEING EXTREMELY EASY TO MANAGE. EACH ASPECT OF WILDLIFE HABITAT; INCLUDING SPACE, FOOD, COVER, AND WATER, CAN BE ALTERED TO ULTIMATELY IMPROVE ITS QUALITY. HABITAT ACQUISITION AND ENHANCEMENT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF SOUND DEER MANAGEMENT, BECAUSE QUALITY HABITAT PROVIDES ESCAPE COVER, A
