Line 14 - the organization understands the importance of having a documents retention and destruction policy and is in the process of establishing one.

The society has a management service agreement with the pa medical society (pamed), in which pamed provides administrative services to the society, which includes membership/administration coordination, board and committee support, marketing and communications, meeting coordination, technology management, and financial management.

The organization is a member driven organization; each person who pays annual dues becomes a member: a. Chapter membership shall be reserved for those veterinarians who qualify as members and who actively established the organization. B. Members (veterinarian) shall be limited to those veterinarians who devote a significant portion of their professional activities to research, teaching, and/or clinical practice of veterinary dermatology, and whom the executive board of the american academy of veterinary dermatology considers eligible as members due to their special contribution, interest, or training in dermatology. Member (veterinarian) memberships shall be approved by the executive board. Members (veterinarian) shall have the right to vote and hold office in the organization. C. Affiliate membership shall be open to non-veterinarians who are interested in veterinary dermatology. Affiliate memberships shall be approved by the executive board. Affiliate members shall not have the right to vote or hold office in the organization. D. Technician membership shall be open to veterinary technicians. Veterinary technicians will provide proof of employment status and position from their employer on company letterhead when applying for membership. Technician memberships shall be approved by the executive board. Technician members shall not have the right to vote or hold office in the organization. E. Student membership shall be open to students who are registered full- time at an accredited veterinary college or university or veterinarians who are enrolled in masters or phd programs. Student members will provide a graduation date when applying for membership and will provide proof of student status. Upon graduation, student members will be required to notify aavd administration and to convert their membership status to the appropriate category. Student memberships shall be approved by the executive board. Student members shall not have the right to vote or hold office in the organization. F. Honorary membership shall be reserved for non-veterinarians who have made major contributions to advance veterinary dermatology. Honorary membership shall be approved by the executive board. Honorary members shall not have the right to vote or hold office in the organization and shall not be required to pay annual dues. G. Life membership shall be reserved for any member in good standing who has reached the age of 65 years and who has been a member for 20 years. Any member who has retired from veterinary medicine may apply for life membership. The membership committee shall consider each application individually and make recommendations to the executive board for approval. Life members shall be exempt from paying dues. It is the prerogative of the membership committee and the executive board to reinstate individuals to active membership.

Proposed amendments to the constitution shall be proposed by at least three members in good standing and submitted to the executive board for consideration. If approved by the executive board, the proposed amendment with the recommendation of the executive board will be announced to the membership at least 30 days in advance of any regular or special meeting at which the proposed amendment may be discussed. The proposed amendment shall be voted upon at the regular meeting of the members, by mail or electronically and adopted by majority vote of the members participating.

A conflict of interest statement is completed annually by officers, directors, and key employees. The president and secretary of the board monitor the policy. Family and business relationships are expressly mentioned in the policy. Board members and other interested persons shall disclose all facts material to the conflict. Such person will not participate in or be present to hear discussions on the conflict except to disclose material facts and respond to questions. The person will not vote on any questions regarding a conflict.

The academy coordinates research in veterinary dermatology; publishes an informational/educational newsletter for members; and provides networking and educational opportunities for member veterinarians as well as member veterinary students and member veterinary technicians. The academy offers an annual award to a senior veterinary student at each veterinary school who excels in clinical dermatology. It also has available the frank kral award for achievements in veterinary dermatology, which provides an avenue for recognition of outstanding achievements and dedicated service to the veterinary profession and specialty of veterinary dermatology by current members of the american academy of veterinary dermatology. The academy donates to the american college of veterinary dermatology research foundation which helps to fund awards to graduate student/s for the advancement of veterinary dermatology.
