Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

For fiscal year 2019-20, the university allocated $900,000 from the dudley chambers trust distributions to contribute $100,000 towards the salary of each of nine members of the faculty. Four of these faculty members have appointments in the school of engineering (chambers fellows) and five have appointments in the school of humanities and sciences (chambers scholars). With one exception, each of the chambers fellows and scholars is an associate professor.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

None of the chambers fellows and scholars currently holds an endowed chair, so the support provided by the dudley chambers trust is especially valuable for these professors. Stanford university benefits greatly from the teaching and research work performed by the chambers fellows and scholars.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Teaching responsibilities for the nine professors vary but, as an example, the chambers scholars in the school of engineering taught a total of 179 students in academic year 2019-20; an average of 45 students per faculty member. The chambers fellows in h&s taught a total of 308 students in academic year 2019-20; an average of 61 per faculty member.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

The frequency of scholarly publications also varies, but the chambers fellows and scholars published a total of 23 scholarly papers in 2019-20. In addition to publishing, research, lecturing, and related teaching activities, the eight professors are actively engaged in mentoring the next generation of academic researchers and teachers. All of the chambers fellows and scholars serve in varying capacities.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Scholarships - the terms of the dudley chambers trust provide that one-third of distributions be used to furnish one or more whole or partial scholarships to students specializing in one or more areas of engineering technology and the natural sciences.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Stanford university chooses to focus the funding designated for scholarships on its national science foundation fellows (nsf). For fiscal year 2019-20, the university allocated $800,000 from the dudley chambers trust distributions to provide fellowships that support 146 nsf fellows in engineering technology and natural science disciplines.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Adapted from nsf website (nsf.gov/about/what.jsp): nsf awards are given to the most promising, talented graduate students in the nation who are pushing the boundaries of science and engineering. The nsf is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering, except for medical sciences.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

The nsf is tasked with keeping the united states at the leading edge of discovery in a wide range of scientific areas, from astronomy to geology to zoology. In addition to funding research in the traditional academic areas, the agency also supports high risk, high pay off ideas, novel collaborations, and numerous projects that may seem like science fiction today, but which the public will take for granted tomorrow.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Fund for education or research - finally, the terms of the dudley chambers trust provide that one-third of distributions be used to pay for expenses incurred by stanford for education or research in one or more areas of engineering technology and the natural sciences, for purposes other than salary payments to faculty members and scholarships.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

In 2019-20, $800,000 of the distribution from the dudley chambers trust was allocated to the office of the vice provost for teaching and learning, which used these funds to provide enhanced classroom technology and staff support needed to enable the professors and students to do their best work.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A CONT.

Fully technologically outfitted linked classrooms allow a more seamless world between the lab and the classroom, allowing for collaborative work that supports breakthroughs. Substantial gifts designated specifically for technology and staff support that enhances the classroom experience are not common at research universities. Providing funding for this much-needed infrastructure is both visionary and highly valued.

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION (TRUST) MAINTAINS A CLOSE AND CONTINUOUS WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION (STANFORD) THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE PROVIDE TO STANFORD AN EXTENSIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEW OF THE TRUST, BOTH WRITTEN AS WELL AS OFFERING A QUARTERLY CONFERENCE CALL TO REVIEW THE TRUST ASSET ALLOCATION, OBJECTIVE, INVESTMENTS, PERFORMANCE, OUR MARKET OUTLOOK AND STRATEGY.
IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt1THE TRUSTEE ALSO REVIEWS THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROVISIONS OF THE TRUST INCLUDING FUTURE DISTRIBUTIONS. THE DIALOGUE IS TWO-WAY AS THE TRUSTEE ENCOURAGE STANFORD TO SHARE WITH THE TRUSTEE THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MARKETS, THE PORTFOLIOS INVESTMENTS, PERFORMANCE, ASSET ALLOCATION AND RISK.
IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt2IN ADDITION, THE TRUSTEE WELCOMES FEEDBACK REGARDING WHETHER THE CURRENT ACCOUNT AND DISTRIBUTIONS ARE MEETING THE NEEDS OF STANFORD. THE TRUSTEE REQUESTS THAT STANFORD SUPPLY AN ANNUAL EXPENDITURE REPORT AS TO THE EXPENDITURE OF FUNDS FROM THE TRUST. THE TRUSTEE ALSO PROVIDES STANFORD WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN MARKET CALLS REGARDING THE TRUSTEES OUTLOOK AND STRATEGY FOR THE MARKETS.
IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt3THESE CALLS ARE ROBUST AND GIVE STANDFORD MORE INFORMATION REGARDING OUR OVERALL STRATEGY IN LIGHT OF CURRENT MARKET EVENTS OR DISLOCATIONS.THE TRUSTEE ENGAGES IN OPEN AND COLLABORATIVE DISCUSSION AS TO THE INVESTMENTS AND INCOME FROM THE TRUST.
IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt4IN ADDITION TO A SIGNIFICANT VOICE WITH RESPECT TO INVESTMENTS, THE SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION SOLELY CHOOSES HOW TO SPEND THE DISTRIBUTIONS FROM THE TRUST, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GOVERNING INSTRUMENT. STANFORD HAS DESIGNED PROGRAMS THAT BEST MEET THE NEEDS OF THEIR ORGANIZATION, SELECTING FACULTY AND SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS TO CARRY OUT THE MISSION AND INTENT OF THE TRUST.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019-20, THE UNIVERSITY ALLOCATED $900,000 FROM THE DUDLEY CHAMBERS TRUST DISTRIBUTIONS TO CONTRIBUTE $100,000 TOWARDS THE SALARY OF EACH OF NINE MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1NONE OF THE CHAMBERS FELLOWS AND SCHOLARS CURRENTLY HOLDS AN ENDOWED CHAIR, SO THE SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE DUDLEY CHAMBERS TRUST IS ESPECIALLY VALUABLE FOR THESE PROFESSORS. STANFORD UNIVERSITY BENEFITS GREATLY FROM THE TEACHING AND RESEARCH WORK PERFORMED BY THE CHAMBERS FELLOWS AND SCHOLARS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE NINE PROFESSORS VARY BUT, AS AN EXAMPLE, THE CHAMBERS SCHOLARS IN THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TAUGHT A TOTAL OF 179 STUDENTS IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-20; AN AVERAGE OF 45 STUDENTS PER FACULTY MEMBER. THE CHAMBERS FELLOWS IN H&S TAUGHT A TOTAL OF 308 STUDENTS IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-20; AN AVERAGE OF 61 PER FACULTY MEMBER.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3THE FREQUENCY OF SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS ALSO VARIES, BUT THE CHAMBERS FELLOWS AND SCHOLARS PUBLISHED A TOTAL OF 23 SCHOLARLY PAPERS IN 2019-20.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4SCHOLARSHIPS - THE TERMS OF THE DUDLEY CHAMBERS TRUST PROVIDE THAT ONE-THIRD OF DISTRIBUTIONS BE USED TO FURNISH ONE OR MORE WHOLE OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS SPECIALIZING IN ONE OR MORE AREAS OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AND THE NATURAL SCIENCES.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5STANFORD UNIVERSITY CHOOSES TO FOCUS THE FUNDING DESIGNATED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS ON ITS NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FELLOWS (NSF).
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6ADAPTED FROM NSF WEBSITE (NSF.GOV/ABOUT/WHAT.JSP): NSF AWARDS ARE GIVEN TO THE MOST PROMISING, TALENTED GRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE NATION WHO ARE PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. THE NSF IS THE ONLY FEDERAL AGENCY WHOSE MISSION INCLUDES SUPPORT FOR ALL FIELDS OF FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, EXCEPT FOR MEDICAL SCIENCES.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt7THE NSF IS TASKED WITH KEEPING THE UNITED STATES AT THE LEADING EDGE OF DISCOVERY IN A WIDE RANGE OF SCIENTIFIC AREAS, FROM ASTRONOMY TO GEOLOGY TO ZOOLOGY.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt8FUND FOR EDUCATION OR RESEARCH - FINALLY, THE TERMS OF THE DUDLEY CHAMBERS TRUST PROVIDE THAT ONE-THIRD OF DISTRIBUTIONS BE USED TO PAY FOR EXPENSES INCURRED BY STANFORD FOR EDUCATION OR RESEARCH IN ONE OR MORE AREAS OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AND THE NATURAL SCIENCES, FOR PURPOSES OTHER THAN SALARY PAYMENTS TO FACULTY MEMBERS AND SCHOLARSHIPS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt9IN 2019-20, $800,000 OF THE DISTRIBUTION FROM THE DUDLEY CHAMBERS TRUST WAS ALLOCATED TO THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING, WHICH USED THESE FUNDS TO PROVIDE ENHANCED CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY AND STAFF SUPPORT NEEDED TO ENABLE THE PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS TO DO THEIR BEST WORK.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt10FULLY TECHNOLOGICALLY OUTFITTED LINKED CLASSROOMS ALLOW A MORE SEAMLESS WORLD BETWEEN THE LAB AND THE CLASSROOM, ALLOWING FOR COLLABORATIVE WORK THAT SUPPORTS BREAKTHROUGHS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt11TRUSTEE REVIEWS ALL UNDERLYING MONETARY AND FACTUAL INFORMATION BEFORE THE IRS FORM 990 IS FILED.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt12AS TRUSTEE, JPMORGAN CHASE BANK NA MAINTAINS A CLOSE AND CONTINUOUS WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OFFICERS OF THE SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION. THE GOVERNING DOCUMENTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, BUT HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SUCH AS BENEFICIARIES, TRUSTEES, EXECUTORS, ETC. JPMORGAN CHASE BANK NA DOES NOT HAVE A PUBLIC CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY. HOWEVER, THE GOVERNING DOCUMENTS AND STATE LAW IMPOSE LIMITATIONS OF TRUSTEE POWERS THAT JPMORGAN CHASE BANK NA STRICTLY FOLLOWS.
