The fund for the envoronment was established in january, 1987 to support environmental causes and issues, including land conservation, clean air and water, and environmental education. The fund operated through grants from philanthropic partners and gifts from individuals, with the proceeds used by the fund to support environmental organizations in michigan. In 1988, the fund, working with national nonprofit earthshare, added the role of environmental workplace giving, with access in the state of michigan's workplace giving program, along with access in various federal agencies' workplace giving, and workplace giving with a handful of corporate partners. The fund did this first under the dba environmental fund for michigan; and then, in 1999, under a partnership with nonprofit environmental funds in 15 other states and national earthshare, operated undet the dba earthshare of michigan. In 2013, the legal status of earthshare of michigan changed from an affiliate of earthshare to a chapter of earthshare. Thus, the dba earthshare of michigan was no longer appropriate. Since 2013, the fund for the environment has had no activity. Plans for the future inclue land conservation, greenways and trails, clean water and green infrastructire, and raising funds to support such issues. The fund is expected to have philnthropic partners as well as nonprofit partners that will assist in responding to such opportunities.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

The fund served as the fiduciary for the annual gathering of the collaboration of regional trail initiatives (crti). Crti is an annual convening of institutions from around the country working on regional trail and greenway networks. Begun in 2018 as a program of the pennsylvania environmental council (pec) as a way to explore issues and opportunities associated with the circuit trails, a network of trails in and around philadelphia, it has expanded to include participants from as diverse as san francisco and portland, oregon to birmingham, alabama and st. Louis. As crti expanded beyond pennsylvania, the fund replaced pec as the fiduciary and institutional manager of crti. The 2025 event, held in charlotte, north carolina, was attended by 65 people representing 29 different states. Activities included learning from the place and engaging with local leaders, exploring challenges with maintenance, creative partnerships with the health community, and working with economically disadvantaged communities.
