The organization provides networking and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators who work in alternative education schools and programs across the state of Michigan. This mission is achieved by holding one annual two-day conference each spring. Historically the conference draws approximately 300 educators. Attendees participate in professional development workshops and sessions designed to improve educational outcomes for public school students. Conference fees are approximately $425.00 per participant. Participant revenue for the 2025 conference was $115,424 and conference expenses were: $88,968.48. This includes use of the conference facility and participant meals. MAEO Stars. Three single day events are conducted for students enrolled in alternative education programs. These are designed to allow alternative education students to gather together and share common experiences. The three days focus primarily on career readiness and civic engagement. One day is held in the fall and two days are held in the spring of each year. Enrollment for each event averages at approximately 50 students and staff. Revenue for the three 2024-2025 events was $7,842.00 and expenses were $9,090.00. This included facility rental and meals for participants. Board retreat. Board member retreat and other meeting expenses: $13,978.00 The MAEO board meets once per year to conduct conference and MAEO Stars planning. Food and accommodation costs are provided by the organization. All board members are volunteers.
