FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The flint institute of arts' (fia) mission is to advance the understanding and appreciation of art for all through collections, exhibitions and educational programs. The fia is the second largest art museum in the state of michigan and one of the largest museum art schools in the nation. Each year, more than 150,000 people visit the fia's galleries and participate in fia programs and services. For more than 85 years, the fia has been responsible for acquiring, protecting and presenting a collection of art and artifacts spanning continents and 5,000 years. The world renowned collection, which now exceeds 8,000 objects, is significant for its depth of important european and american paintings and sculptures, 15th century to the present, and its extensive holdings of decorative and applied arts including important ethnographic study collections dating back five millennia. Each year, the fia presents as many as 13 exhibitions both from our permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions borrowed from other museums, galleries, and individuals. These exhibitions provide the community and regional audiences with presentations of works of art that serve to entertain and enlighten visitors of all ages and backgrounds. In conjunction with exhibitions, the fia organizes programs including member previews, guest lectures, receptions, gallery talks, demonstrations, educational programs, and panel discussions. The fia is committed to making art available, approachable, and accessible to all through a broad range of interpretive programs that allow multiple ways of accessing information on the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions through guided tours; lectures and community dialogues; films and videos; and print, audio, and multimedia resources. Printed exhibition and collection catalogues, gallery guides, school brochures, audio guide entries, and online resources are produced to enhance educational opportunities for the broadest possible audience. Fia educations programs serve more than 40,000 individuals annually. Recognizing the critical role high quality visual arts experiences play, especially in early childhood education, the fia is providing direct services to k-12 and head start programs throughout genesee county and ten surrounding counties (kent, lapeer, oakland, saginaw, sanilac, st. Clair, st. Joseph, tuscola, washtenaw, and wayne). Fia education programs utilize comprehensive art education strategies to support school improvement goals and make meaningful connections between the visual arts and the prek-12 core curriculum. The fia offers thematic units with in-school presentations and visits to the fia linked to language arts, social studies, science and/or math. Education programs are also offered for adults, college students, families, seniors, educators, and homeschool families. And, recognizing the diversity of the general public's abilities and needs the fia offers two healing arts programs, one designed for individuals in the early or middle stages of alzheimer's disease, and one for patients undergoing prolonged treatment for chronic or serious illness. The fia art school offers programming designed to support the mission of the fia with dynamic curricula to engage children, teens, adults, and families from the community through creative processes, studio experiences, and public art exhibitions. Each year the fia art school serves more than 16,000 people participating in studio classes, gallery workshops, artist presentations/demonstrations, free family activities, receptions, and community outreach. The fia art school runs at full capacity from 9 am to 9 pm with an annual enrollment of more than 1,700 students. The art school remains dedicated to the educational enlightenment of the public through formal studio instruction in drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, glass mosaic, fiber, and metal sculpture. The school also provides summer camps for youth, free family activities
