Major Activities

Activity 2
Productions dptv leveraged its production capabilities this past year by utilizing our high definition mobile production truck, allowing us to produce and record programs on location throughout metropolitan detroit and beyond. The mobile production truck also provides streaming video of both live and on demand events. First robotics competition - dptv produced a live day-long stream of the first robotics finals competition from eastern michigan university, and then produced a one-hour primetime special capturing all the excitement of a state sports competition. Students compete in a venue where intelligence, engineering and strategic ingenuity are highlighted when teams build and operate robots in an intense competition. The detroit regional chamber mackinac conference - dptv produced 16 hours of live broadcast coverage over three days from grand hotel on mackinac island, plus six additional hours of live online streaming coverage. The braodcast was carried live on 56.2, providing a unique look into the issues facing michigan and the collaborations that are critical for growth and improvement. Included was a daily half hour highlight program carried on public television stations across the state. The program was also available as open source programming for media outlets to use as a live streamed video program on their websites - a service that was used by more than 100 media and public interest websites. Great lakes week conference - produced by dptv, this coverage of key environmental and great lakes water quality issues as well as the latest in water science was carried across the entirety of twelve u.s. States and the canada province of ontario, with outlying coverage from a dozen additional markets outside of the great lakes basin. Dptv collaborated with wviz-tv in cleveland to produce the conference and make it available to public and commercial media outlets, environmental and public interest groups around the region. The sphinx finals competition concert - dptv once again produced and broadcast this concert from detroit's orchestra hall showcasing talented young black and latino classical music string musicians. Miweek with stephen henderson and nolan finley hosted by christy mcdonald -commentary and analysis of important issues in michigan with an emphasis on current events, politics and government. The thirty-minute program is produced weekly and airs on friday evenings. American graduate - dptv opened the 2012-13 school year with a special production of "ready for school," linking the first day of school to graduation success. Then, on "american graduate day" in september, dptv joined the national broadcast recognizing national and local organizations working to prevent high school dropout. Dptv continued to produce local and national programs focusing on five key content areas; children and education, health and wellness, public affairs/leadership, energy & environment, and arts & culture. Samples of programs produced this year, by content area included: children and education: kids club live; ecic early learning vignettes; american graduate (two separate broadcasts including an 8-hour graduation special); pre-school u; the future of education; and ready-to-learn workshops. Health and wellness: medical main street; help on the homefront: veteran's courts; next avenue; be a money smarty; caregivers confronting the care system; the end of illness with dr agus. Public affairs and leadership: american black journal; miweek; mackinac policy conference; broadcasts from conferences and presentations by business leaders for michigan, and the detroit economic club. Energy and environment: in addition to the great lakes week broadcasts, dptv launched a quarterly series of broadcasts called great lakes now connect in partnership with the nature conservancy to explore issues such as invasive species, water levels, beach health, etc. Arts and culture: produced and streamed approximately 30 detroit symphony orchestra concerts; s

Communications detroit public television and wrcj 90.9 fm continued their success in providing on-air and online media resources to the community. Such resources are made available to the entire community and welcome content from anyone. The goal is to understand issues and to become media leaders in key areas, while staying engaged with the public and creating dialog with audiences. Examples of successful community outreach activities this year included: great lakes week: the dptv broadcast team originated more than 20 hours of live programming from the combined meetings of the leading great lakes governance organizations. Coverage was made freely available online and extended to 24 markets across the united states. Mivote.org: producers traveled to mackinac island to televise and webcast the annual mackinac policy conference with civic, business and political leaders, making it available and accessable to the public throughout michigan through both public media, commercial media and community partners. Rosa parks national day of courage: on february 4, 2013, dptv originated 12 hours of continuous online coverage and 8.5 hours of broadcast coverage on 56.2 of this event at the henry ford museum. The combination of online, broadcast and social media engagement drew visitors from 43 states. American graduate: throughout the year, dptv continued to expand its network of relationships and collaborations around issues of post-secondary education, school readiness, college readiness, technical education and the need for skilled trades. Community conversations with the center for michigan resulted in a major report and a town hall broadcast in march 2013 entitled "the future of education." and for the second year, dptv saluted the class of 2013 with a special "american graduate: graduation celebration" in june. Detroit performs: community engagement is at the heart of dptv's arts and cultural programming. Detroit performs promotes and connects artists and cultural organizations through a website, tv series, and ongoing email and social media efforts. Ready to learn community workshops to promote literacy to more than 5,300 children and adults in 135 workshops; distributing new books, with an anti-bullying, basic family finance curricula. Dptv fall festival: welcomed more than 400 children and families to riley broadcast center for halloween themed activities and much more. Under the radar: in november 2012, dptv hosted a "travel in michigan" event in ann arbor downton abbey: in december 2012, dptv hosted public screenings in west bloomfield for the popular masterpiece theatre series. Antiques roadshow: in june 2013, dptv hosted the popular pbs series as more than 5,000 people brought family heirlooms to detroit's cobo center. Wrcj 90.9 fm "kickstart your summer": june 2013 all-day live broadcast from edsel & eleanor ford house in grosse pointe providing free promotion for more than 30 non-profit arts organizations. 1000 attendees. Classical brunch concert series: six concerts produced with the community house in birmingham. 1200 attendees. Dso neighborhood concert series: wrcj 90.9 fm had a presence at all 24 concerts and met hundreds of listeners. Concert of colors: in july 2012, wrcj 90.9 fm broadcast detroit jazz all-stars concert live from detroit's orchestra hall. Detroit jazz festival: wrcj 90.9 fm had a booth at, and produced a live broadcast from, the 3-day labor day weekend event in downtown detroit. Dptv kids club live: in june 2013,wrcj 90.9 fm provided hands-on musical experiences for more than 1500 children in cooperation with the ann arbor symphony.
