Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

To provide grant funding to programs based upon acceptance of applications received, reviewed and chosen by the Mission Services Committee.

Part X, Line 2:

Goodwill Industries of West Michigan, Inc. and GoodTemps, Inc. are not-for-profit organizations exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are exempt from similar state and local taxes. Although the Organizations were granted income tax exemption by the Internal Revenue Service, such exemption does not apply to "unrelated business taxable income." The Organizations have been classified as not private foundations. The Organization analyzes its income tax filing positions in the jurisdictions where it is required to file income tax returns, as well as all open tax years in these jurisdictions, to identify potential uncertain tax positions. The Organization treats interest and penalties attributable to income taxes, and reflects any charges for such, to the extent they arise, as a component of its management and general expenses. The Organization has evaluated its income tax filing positions for fiscal years 2013 through 2016, the years which remain subject to examination as of December 31, 2016. The Organization concluded that there are no significant uncertain tax positions requiring recognition in the Organization's financial statements. The Organization does not expect the total amount of unrecognized tax benefits ("UTB") (e.g. tax deductions, exclusions, or credits claimed or expected to be claimed) to significantly change in the next twelve months. The Organization does not have any amounts accrued for interest and penalties related to UTB at December 31, 2016 or 2015, and is not aware of any claims for such amounts by federal or state income tax authorities.

IRS990/Desc0Retail and Donated Goods Program Services - Goodwill Industries of West Michigan accepts donated clothing, and other household goods, from the public and sells these donations in Goodwill's 16 community-based retail stores. Over 90% of the revenue from the sale of these goods goes directly toward supporting and growing its mission-based employment and training programs and services to the West Michigan community. Goodwill raises additional revenue for its mission through participation in the online auction site, www.shopgoodwill.com, and online book sales. Goodwill's retail stores and donation centers also provide on-the-job training to people with disabilities and other disadvantages, enrolled in Goodwill's various programs. Clothing and other goods not suitable for resale in Goodwill stores are sorted and sold to various recyclers or salvage brokers for the greatest value, diverting as much as possible from the waste stream. Additionally, select textiles are cut and converted to "industrial wipers and sold to area businesses. Goodwill is focused on maximizing donation value for its mission services, as well as reducing waste.
