“At each Board and Committee meeting, if there is a discussion of selecting or engaging a vendor or service provider, all in attendance are asked to recuse themselves from the discussion if there could be a perceived conflict. Annually, the organization reviews and discusses the conflict of interest policy and requests that each Board member list and acknowledge any known conflicts.”

“The Board may hire and compensate individuals for necessary services rendered to the Organization so long as such compensation is reasonable. The Board shall determine reasonable compensation amounts based upon compensation paid by similarly situated nonprofits for like services. The Board may rely upon salary studies, as well as data regarding compensation paid by peer organizations of similar size to determine reasonable compensation. The terms of such compensation and information relied upon shall be recorded in writing. An individual who is a member of the Board who receives compensation, either directly or indirectly from the Organization for services, is precluded from participating in discussions or votes pertaining to their own compensation. Currently, all directors are volunteers.”

We're protecting families, expanding access to services, and building a more compassionate community.2024 Total Impact: 4,255 Pets Helped-1,619 rescued through public intake and transfers-282 helped through our First Respnder partnership-246 cared for through the Temporary Care Program-2,111 fed through the Pet Food ProgramDomestic Violence Support: Statistics show that 45% of women delay leaving abusive situations because they fear what could happen to their pets. Our Temporary Care Program ensures survivors don't have to choose between their safety and their animals. In additon to caring for the pets of survivors in crisis, we also helped build and provide support for the on-site pet shelter programs at both Sojourner Center and A New Leaf (Autumn House)-two of the Valley's leading domestic violence shelters. These partnerships ensure that families escaping abuse can keep their pets close and protected during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.First Responder Program: In partnership with the City of Tempe, our First Responder Program allows officers to bring pets directly to our shelter 24/7 when an owner is arrested, hospitalized, evicted, or otherwise unable to care for them. In 2024, 282 pets were placed into immediate safety through this program. Thanks to our supporters, first responders have a reliable, compassionate option for animals caught in moments of crisis.”
