“Review of the IRS Form 990 was delegated to the audit committee. After review a draft copy of Form 990 was emailed to all board members. After a 30 day review period, the Form 990 is then filed electronically with the IRS.”
“The Museum maintains a Conflict of Interest Policy which applies to all trustees, members of standing committees, as well as senior management and other designated members of staff. The Policy requires that each person to whom the policy applies complete the annual disclosure statement to identify any business, financial or personal interest in matters relating to the Museum. The Policy forbids such individuals from voting on or using their personal influence in connection with such matters. In event the Museum does conduct business with a related party, the financial terms of those relationships are reported annually to the Audit Committee, whose members must be independent per the terms of the charter.”
“The Compensation Committee annually reviews performance, goal achievement, peer data, surveys, etc., when setting the annual salary for the Pritzker Director / Chief Executive Officer. The Committee reviews salaries of senior management and also approves the annual allocation to the staff salary increase pool. The Committee documents its findings in writing, and employees are not present when their compensation is set.”
“Upon request, the Museum provides the information.”
“Collection acquisitions ($486,724); Collection deaccessions $6,980; Unrealized loss on Derivatives $173,833, rounding $1.”
“Schedule D, Part III, Line 1 - In conformity with the practice commonly followed by most American art museums, the value of the Museum's collection is not included in the financial statements. Contributions for the purchase of art objects, the proceeds from deaccessions of art and the cost of art objects purchased are reported as other changes in net assets in the statement of activities. The Museum's policy is to maintain and continue to acquire significant works of contemporary art (principally 1945 to present). From time to time, objects may be sold in accordance with the Museum's collection management policy. Deaccessions may result if one of the following conditions has been met: (a) physical condition has deteriorated to a point beyond display or study; or (b) an object is believed to be no longer pertinent to the scope of the Museum's collection. All proceeds realized from deaccessions are allocated to purchase other works of art. Proceeds from deaccessions amounted to $6,980 and $521,995 for the years ended June 30, 2014 and 2013, respectively.”
“The collection is comprised of approximately 6,024 objects in all media created during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through exhibitions, preservation and research, the collection supports the museum's mission to be an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time.”
“The endowment funds are used to support the Museum's operations, subject to a spending policy. The Museum draws 5.0% of the average market value of assets over a 12 quarter period ending with the prior 12/31.”
“The Museum's application of GAAP USA regarding uncertain tax positions had no effect on its financial position as management believes the Museum has no material unrecognized income tax benefits, including any potential risk of loss of its not-for-profit tax status. The Museum would recognize interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax positions in interest and income tax expense, respectively. However, the Museum has no amounts accrued for interest or penalties as of June 30, 2014 and 2013. There are no ongoing federal, state, or local tax audits; however, the Museum's tax returns for 2010 and subsequent years remain open to examination.”
“Investment Spending Policy Draw $3,225,000; Rental Expenses $534,353; COGS (Store) $2,604,107; Miscellaneous Expenses $11,063.”
“Dividends and Interest $130,763; Realized Gains $948,551”
“Rental Expenses $534,353; COGS (Store) $2,604,107; Miscellaneous Expenses $11,061.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | (4a) Exhibitions: The MCA presented 10 major and 9 smaller exhibitions in FY 2014 and welcomed 152,633 visitors. Total FY2014 attendance was 263,806. From July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014, the MCA's curatorial team continued to present thought provoking exhibitions aligned with the museum's vision. MCA exhibitions offer a new model for how a contemporary art museum can best serve and stimulate its public, and new works are regularly commissioned and brought into the MCA collection out of its exhibition program. A) Homebodies (June 29 to October 13, 2013): Homebodies presented work by contemporary artists from six continents who examine the space of the home, both literally and figuratively, as an integral site for making art. Through these varied points of view, visitors were presented with a complex view of the domestic: the home as a site where art is made, as a familiar place that invites closer scrutiny, and as the setting for psychological investigations or even dramatic self-transformations. B) Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes (June 29 to October 13, 2013): Modern Cartoonist, the first museum retrospective of acclaimed comic book and graphic artist Daniel Clowes's work, assembled a comprehensive collection of Clowes's original drawings and provided audiences with an uncommon occasion to explore his studio practice in the public setting of the museum, as well as explore the evolution of his aesthetic, and his complicated relationship with Chicago, the city where he was raised and lived early in his career. C) The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology (November 12, 2013 to March 9, 2014): The Way of the Shovel traced the interest in history, archaeology, and archival research that defines some of the most highly regarded art of the last decade. Consisting almost entirely of work produced after the year 2000, The Way of the Shovel re-imagined the art world as an alternative "History Channel" that is as concerned with remembering histories as it is with challenging their truthfulness. D) Isa Genzken: Retrospective (April 12-August 13, 2014): Isa Genzken presented the first large-scale retrospective of this renowned sculptor in an American museum. This retrospective encompassed Genzken's work in all media, produced over the past three decades, and secured Genzken's legacy as a transgenerational force in international contemporary art. The Ascendant Artist series spotlights the MCA's commitment to the art of our time by presenting talented artists in their first significant museum exhibitions: E) Paul Sietsema (September 7, 2013 to January 5, 2014) showcased the artist's exploration of the nature of objects and images through a wide range of media. Sietsema's practice embodies his meditation on what it means to make art and the role of an artist today-amid the barrage of images; the telescoping of past, present, and future that instant access to information seems to provide; and the ease with which digital means can present alternate realities. F) William J. O'Brien (January 25 to May 18, 2014) demonstrated the prolific output of this Chicago-based artist in a broad range of media, from sculpture and ceramics to drawing, textiles, and painting. The exhibition developed new language around O'Brien's contemporary abstract artworks-language that focused on process rather than individual expression or technique and that considered his body of work as a reflection of a multitude of cultural sources. O'Brien is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. MCA Collection exhibitions are comprised mostly of works from the MCA Collection and supplemented by loans from the Chicago community: G) Think First, Shoot Later (May 18 to November 10, 2013) examined many of the defining artists and themes in conceptual photography over the past four decades. Featuring a highly diverse range of artists who borrow freely across the range of photographic possibilities, Think First, Shoot Later gave audien |
