Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1

The Executive Committee consists of the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer and is chaired by the Chairperson. The Executive Committee conducts business between board meetings as necessary and reports its actions at the next meeting of the board. The Committee evaluates the programs and services provided by Riverview Center, Inc. and reviews the long-range plans for services, is responsible for the performance evaluation of the Executive Director and makes recommendations for a salary adjustment with input from the Board of Directors, reviews the personnel evaluations completed by the Executive Director, and meets a minimum of six times per year.

The Form 990 is provided to management, the finance committee, and the board of directors in order to review for accuracy before being filed with the IRS.

Annually, members of the board of directors, employees, professional affiliates and volunteers are asked either verbally or in a written statement to document any real or perceived conflicts of interest that they or family members may have with the organization. IRS990/Desc0Riverview Center, Inc. is an Illinois nonprofit corporation with offices in Galena and Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Decorah, and Waterloo, Iowa, which promotes, encourages, and facilitates the reduction of incidences and effects of sexual assault and domestic violence through victim support services. The Organization is supported primarily through grants. The Organization supports its mission through various primary service areas:Therapy - The organization provides victim-centered, in person counseling services to support the victim's recovery process. Services are age appropriate. Statement continued on Schedule O.Crisis Intervention Counseling Very short-term intensive and direct counseling that assists the victim or significant other in returning to the pre-crisis level of functioning.Supportive Counseling A cooperative process between counselor and client in which counselor encourages, upholds and sustains an internal strength, a way of reacting, a decision or way of behaving regarding specific incidences. It also involves assuring the client that the situation in which they are struggling has an attainable solution.Individual Advocacy The Organization provides emotional support and information to victims of sexual assault and their significant others during medical procedures and criminal justice proceedings. Also, the Organization promotes sensitive, effective response by medical and criminal justice institutions, other involved agencies or individuals on behalf of a special victim.Institutional Advocacy The Organization works with the criminal justice system, medical institutions, child protective services and other institutions on behalf of all sexual assault victims to ensure sensitive, effective policies and procedures for handling sexual assault cases.Information/Referral The Organization is a source of information for telephone or in-person requests for information about sexual assault and domestic violence, location or additional sources on the subject of sexual assault and domestic violence or location/explanation of people and services that may be helpful to a victim, significant other or interested individual.Education/Professional Training The Organization provides community education through presentations to groups of people on the subject of sexual assault and domestic violence, the myths associated with its origins and perpetration, the effect of sexual assault and domestic violence on the victims, and the characteristics of an offender. Also, the Organization provides in-depth education, skills building, and evaluation of skills in order to prepare others to effectively intervene on behalf of victims of sexual assault. 24-Hour Hotline and/or Accessibility The Organization provides a telephone line or other access to 24-hour telephone crisis intervention for victims, significant others and other individuals as needed. Riverview Center provided 1,586 individuals (including 390 children) with 21,925.25 hours of trauma-informed services through sexual assault/abuse services for survivors in 14 counties in Northeast Iowa and 2 counties in Northwest Illinois and domestic violence services in 2 counties in Northwest Illinois. There were a total of 2,253 crisis and information/referral calls/contacts from survivors and the community. Community awareness events/ programs/ initiatives were provided for 159,495 community attendees.Riverview Center is unique in that it is the only non-culturally specific agency in the 14 county Northeast Region of Iowa providing sexual assault services and the only agency providing sexual assault or domestic violence services in the 2 counties we serve in Illinois. Unlike other mental health agencies, all of the services are provided absolutely free of charge regardless of biological sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, English proficiency, race and/or ethnicity, housing or incarceration status, or disability. We educate about how to be an ally and an active bystander when sexual or domestic violence is suspected or witnessed and how to best support survivors on their journey toward healing.
