The art collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in net assets without donor restrictions in the year in which the items are acquired, or as net assets with donor restrictions if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Donor-restricted contributions whose restrictions are met within the same year as received are reported as without donor restrictions. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the consolidated financial statements. Proceeds from the sale of art or insurance settlements are recorded as net assets with donor restrictions for the acquisition of art. The collection is maintained for education and research in furtherance of public service, rather than for financial gain.
