“To sponser and engage in research related to solution mining, cavern utilization, and environmental effects thereof and to present papers of current interest to the industry relative to solution mining and cavern utilization.”

“Continuing programs of research are: lab research projects acquiring salt core for future lab testing, correlation of physical characteristics of various salt with mechanical properties fo design purposes, including thermal expansion. Results apply to cavern and mine design, including conditions simulating cavern pressure fast cycling. Major, ongoing topic is cavern sealing and abandonment (cs&a),in 2018 was focused on very slow salt creep test investigations in underground salt mines. An open major research initiative involves potential use of salt caverns for renewable, or green, energy storage. The results of research completed during 2018 are applicable to plugging and abandonment of salt caverns, and to storage cavern design for high frequency salt storage cavern cycling (hfsscc) for faster cycling for wind or solar power. Of importance to the industry are 2 research reports completed in 2018: completed 3rd in series of laboratory analysis of hanging string vibration to avoid vibration induced damage to well/cavern hanging pipe strings in caverns, and updated/finalized a comprehensive world salt deposit and cavern compilation of worldwide salt deposits and cavern fields. Field verification is planned next year.”
