Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To provide a permanent organization of railway suppliers and other organizations to cooperate with the railroads for the benefit of the railroad and rail transit industries and their supply industries; to cooperatively study matters of interest to the railroad and rail rapid transit equipment and supply industries; to hold periodic meetings and exhibitions for railroad organizations, which shall be informative and educational with the view toward improving the efficiency, safety, maintenance and operation of railroads based upon the latest research and development; to represent and protect the interest of members in their relationships with the federal, state and local governments.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 3

Rsi has delegated the management of its daily operations to smithbucklin corporation in washington, dc since july 2021. Smithbucklin is a management company which manages all aspects of the institute in accordance with rsi's bylaws and policies. Operations may include, but are not limited to, administration, membership, finance and accounting, conference and event planning, education, marketing, information technology and government relations. Smithbucklin employees provide these services.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

Rsi has two categories of members: regular and special. Regular members consist of companies and organizations which provide goods and services to the national freight and passenger railroad industry and other railway supply companies. Special members consist of but are not limited to railroads, financial insitutions, law firms, publishing companies and other entities and insitutions that share the purpose and goals of rsi but may not directly sell to or represent the railroad industry. The board of directors has the sole discretion in determining which companies are eligible under the special membership category.
