Activity 2

COLLECTIONS AND RESEARCH The museum seeks to utilize and showcase the museum's premier collections, including our unparalleled collection of Abraham Lincoln materials. The institution seeks to discover the power of the original historical materials and to improve access and maximize the collections. It allows people to engage in making personal connections to history and the artifacts represented. It makes these materials available to the public through multiple platforms. The museum's 22 million collection items is a most treasured history collection. It includes the second largest Costume collection in the world, the Hedrich Blessing photography collection, a Betsy Ross flag, and the complete library of Studs Terkel interviews. Efforts are ongoing to photograph, digitize and catalogue the collection to make it more accessible to visitors, students, and researchers. The Research Center has served more than 8,000 patrons in FY13, onsite and inquiries utilized our online curriculum and online collections research capabilities.

Activity 3

EXHIBITS The key component of an exhibit is communicating Chicago's stories to our visitors. To provide stories in multiple languages in the exhibition text panels along with photos, videos and the historic artifacts. These enable the visitor to explore the concepts of history. The exhibits are designed, fabricated and installed so that our audience is interpreting and interacting in history. In addition to ongoing permanent exhibtions such as "Chicago: Crossroads of America" and "Lincoln's Chicago". The history museum presents topical exhibtions that focus on the stories of Chicago's many diverse communities. FY2013 exhibitions included "50 Years of Ebony-Fashion Fair", "Unexpected Chicago", "Vivian Maier's Chicago" and "Shalom Chicago".
