“The government of Eswatini has entered contracts to provide livestock to South Africa. The government agrees to work with local groups willing to raise livestock. They will buy cows, goats, and pigs from local farmers who raise animals in quantity. This loan is to start a community feedlot in Mhlosheni Eswatini (one of poorest areas of Eswatini) and will pay for building the animal pens and needed structures to get the feedlot started. Once built and inspected, the Eswatini government has approved grant funds to this local group of homestead villages for them to purchase the initial cattle, feed, animal vaccines, etc. once the pens are ready. We are working with these 11 homestead villages providing entrepreneurship training and animal care workshops to make sure they are ready to care for the animals when we get to that point, and the government is providing seminars and training to the villagers in the 11 homesteads. This project will help make many people in a very poor community self-reliant for the first time, and many villages self-supporting in the near future (within 18 months or so). Our goal in working in Eswatini is to pull people out of poverty with a hand up, not a hand out. Pasture Valley Children Missions did not have enough funds available to allocate to get this project started, so the President loaned the funds at no interest for five years. The villagers received approval for this feedlot project from the Eswatini government in December, 2024 and building the pens and other structures on assigned Swazi Nation land (provided to the community at no charge) begins in April 2025. We hope this is the first of many such projects to reduce poverty in rural Eswatini.”
