| Beginning in 2009, Golden Acorns has run a summer day camp for children ages five to eleven. The camp began with approximately fifteen children and has grown to serve over one hundred children over a six week period. Children participated in various teacher-lead activities that explored different cultures and healing arts from around the world. They learned about stewardship of the earth, i.e., harvesting herbs and permaculture. Most days began and ended with Yoga, T'ai Chi or Qigong, and once a week the children learned camp-crafting. The intent is to bring about greater awareness and sensitivity of self and others leading to a natural sense of heightened responsibility for the world. | $58,095 | - |

| IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt | 0 | Current Year Facts and Circumstances: 10% Facts and CircumstancesPercentage of SupportGolden Acorns Summer Camp is the vision of its major donors, Helen Wildman-Meehan and her husband Daniel. Helen is the founder of the camp and its mission is to offer children ages 4-14 a summer camp experience that offers an opportunity for learning sustainable practices and how to care for the environment. The children also learn about herbalism and other healing arts, yoga, Tai'Chi, meditation, and compassionate communication (a form of mediation). The board of Golden Acorns Summer Camp is actively working to obtain more public support. It has maintained public support of 20% (well over the 10% level) for 2013 and 2014. In the 2015 year, the board has applied for numerous public grants from local foundations and governmental organizations in an effort to increase the overall percentage of public support. The board has also held benefit fund raisers such as variety shows, raffles, bake sales, and has participated in local flea markets and other events such as Chamber of Commerce job fairs, the women's health fair and other events with booths advertising the camp and soliciting campers and donations.Sources of SupportGolden Acorns Summer Camp is a local camp that appeals primarily to the Santa Fe community. It's ability to attract support is primarily limited to the region in which its campers live. While 2014 was Golden Acorns' sixth year, it has taken time to build its structure and to foster community awareness of its value as a camp experience for children. Programs are open to all children in Santa Fe and the surrounding communities. Enrollment is encouraged for children with both cognitive and physical disabilities. They encourage diversity of cultures. In 2015, Golden Acorns has applied for grants from the Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Rotary Club, and the Frost Foundation. They have received a $5,000 grant from 'Clothes Helping Kids' in the summer of 2015. Only a proven camp is awarded these grants and it has taken time for Golden Acorns to establish its positive reputation.Representative Governing BodyThe current board is comprised of several community members. Jackie Radis is a former Executive Director of the MoMing Center for the Performing Arts in Chicago and she is a teacher, dancer and performer. Kimberly Wildharber is a Bureau Chief for the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Hadeel Alessa is currently a PhD candidate at UNM in the area of Family Studies and she has degrees from the George Mason University in Psychology and she has a masters degree from Tufts University in Child Development. Daniel Meehan, DDS is a maxillofacial surgeon in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and is a major donor. Understanding the need for a broad community-based board, Golden Acorns is currently recruiting to expand the board membership. Availabilty of ServicesGolden Acorns is open and actively solicits children from all the communities in and around Santa Fe. They collaborate with homeless-centered non-profits and other groups to involve their clients' children in this educational camp. Sonrisa and Casa Familia (St Elizabeth Shelter) and Santa Fe Public Schools Adelante Program all have children of their clients in the camp on Scholarship. The free tuition and scholarships are all provided by Golden Acorns. Many children from immigrant families and from the high risk south side of Santa Fe attend the camp and receive scholarships. Understanding the benefits that children derive from attending this camp, St Elizabeth Shelter chose to be a donor to Golden Acorns Camp this last year. Public Participation in Programs or PoliciesMembers of the broader community participate in the camp as guest teachers. Members of the GAIA Gardens as well as EarthCare/YouthWorks teach gardening and care for the environment. A wildlife specialist taught about wildlife sustainability. Teachers from Kuwait, Guinea, India, Mali, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria taught campers ab |
