“In conformity with the practice followed by many museums, artifacts purchased and donated are not included in the statement of financial position. The center's collections are on display and are used by researchers, historians, and others who are interested in studying norwegian genealogy. The center employs several staff members performing curatorial functions to ensure the collections are protected and preserved. In the normal course of business, collection items are not to be sold but rather maintained in perpetuity. However, should the center's board deem it appropriate to dispose of an item, any proceeeds from the disposal is used to purchase new items for the collection.”

“The permanent collections housed at the center are an important asset to this organization. Acquired by either purchase or gift, the collections are primarily composed of printed and bound books, as well as other types of printed materials: periodicals, newsletters, and related printed materials of all types. Printed or typed family histories, ranging from amateur productions to sophisticated printed and illustrated examples, form a unique and useful part of our collections. The collections also include a large holding of microfilm records. Whether printed, typed, manuscript, digital, or microfilm, the collections include the following main research categories: -norwegian emigration records, with special index for 1825 through 1850 -norwegian census records from 1801, 1865, 1875, and 1900 -norwegian and norwegian-american church record, including birth marriage, and cemetary records -u.s. And canadian transit passenger lists -u.s. Cemetery transcripts -u.s. Census records from 1850, 1860, and 1880 -norwegians in montana census compilation -norwegian local histories called "bydeboker" -norwegian and norwegian-american family histories -norwegian and norwegian-american reference books the center's collections are on display and are used by researchers, historians, and others who are interested in studying norwegian genealogy. “The purpose of the endowment fund is to provide stable financial support to meet the operational and capital needs of the center.”

“The center adopted the accounting guidance for recognizing and measuring uncertain tax positions. The center follows the statutory requirements for their income tax accounting and generally avoids risks associated with potentially problematic tax positions that may be challenged upon examination. Management believes any liability resulting from taxing authorities imposing additional income taxes from activites deemed to be unrelated to the center's tax-exempt status would not have a material effect on their financial statements. The center's federal exempt organization tax returns are subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally for three years after they are filed. With few exceptions, the center is no longer subject to such examinations for years before 2020.”
