| The "DREAM A DREAM PROJECT: Movement workshop for incarcerated men and women" is a program which reaches to members of the incarcerated population at correctional facilities in New York. The Dance classes have between 6 and 12 participants enrolled and incorporate physical warm ups, relaxation exercises and Butoh training. Using simple movements and basic dance training for beginners, this class provides a healthy physical and emotional outlet to participants. No prior dance experience is required. Every few months, the inmates perform in front of a mixed audience of inmates and civilians. A Q&A ensues. The performances are an essential part of the program, and provide the participants with a unique chance to offer something deeply personal in front of strangers. In 2013, this program took place at at Queensboro Correctional Facility, supported, in part, by the New York Department of Cultural Affairs. For the first time in 6 years, this program reached out to men. After eight weeks of classes, 3 participants performed a 30-minute piece on July 3, 2013, in front of 120 fellow inmates, 20 civilians and staff members. They had never performed or danced before this program. Overall, participants reported a new openness towards others, a new ability to bond with each other, an increase in strength and flexibility, and a new positive outlook on life. The class helped them face their imminent release from prison with hope, courage and dignity. One student, X, read us a letter he wrote at the end of program explaining how this class helped him "courageously face countless emotions and challenges, and overcome many barriers". Susan Hamaker, a writer for Japanculture-nyc.com who witnessed the performance wrote: "A Triumph" "In eight short weeks Vangeline Theater's Dream a Dream Project transformed those three men who performed. In thirty short minutes the fruits of her labor transformed an entire audience." | Dream a Dream Project scholarship- rehabilitation program with Vangeline Theater The Vangeline Theater offered a six- months scholarship to one inmate from Queensboro Correctional Facility after his release from prison in July 2013. The participant was able to continue his dance training weekly and also take intensive workshops with Master teachers. The participant reported a smooth transition into civilian life and was praised by his parole officer as a "model parolee". He still takes dance classes with Vangeline Theater to this date and has become a very successful teacher of young children himself. He writes: " I have continued my studies under Vangeline since my release in July and honestly there's not many words I can find to explain how beneficial, inspiring, fulfilling, and powerful the experience has been. I have so gratefully been granted a six month scholarship to study with her which in all honesty, without it I would have not been able to attend. Her classes have been a tool to help me along my journey of self discovery. They have been an outlet to freely express myself without the fear of judgment or criticism. She has taught me that we are able to face the darkest parts of our being, accept them, then transmute these weaknesses into strength. I am honored to be Vangeline's student. Since my release I have gotten a very good job, successfully complied with the terms of parole, got my own apartment and have been living a clean sober and productive life. I have goals i set for myself and dreams I am working to accomplish. Everyday I can see these dreams become a reality. I can say that ever week I eagerly anticipate coming to see Vangeline, and take her class. It has been a tremendous help in my life." | $0 | $0 |
