HENRY RUAN 6.CHANGCHUN ZHANG(II) Annual Conference: Date: May 6, 2017, Location: SUNY College of Optometry 33 W. 42nd Street New York, NY 10036 Organized by: Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York (CLTA-GNY) Nanjing University SUNY College of Optometry Wenzhou Medical University Topic: Teaching Chinese as a World Language: Research, Practice & Innovation As Chinese language programs continue to proliferate throughout the country and around the world, Chinese language educators will need to re-conceptualize Chinese language education in light of the new opportunities and challenges posed by this explosion of interest. As larger and larger numbers of American students - at younger and younger ages - begin learning Chinese, it will be necessary to develop new ways of thinking about the Chinese language and Chinese learning that incorporate new insights in student motivation and psychology, new approaches to linguistic analysis, and that recognize the key roles played by technology and multimedia devices in students daily lives. The conference will address all of these opportunities and challenges, with an emphasis on the topics of: 1.RESEARCH: This area includes Linguistics, culture, pedagogy, program implementation, assessments, etc. 2.PRACTICE: This area includes student motivation, administration, program promotion, teaching materials, classroom instructional strategies, ACTFL 5 Cs standards application, teacher training, community engagement, etc. 3.INNOVATION: This area includes technology and media use, online and distance learning, application of recent research on brain and learning theories, etc. Participants: 250 persons attended this conference. (III) Nanjing Normal University Summer Master Program in Chinese To meet the growing demand for qualified Chinese language teachers in the U.S., the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York (CLTA-GNY) is handling applications for a master program in teaching Chinese as a foreign language offered by Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University, a major university with a strong program in teaching Chinese as a foreign language in China. This program is designed for people who wish to teach Chinese in the U.S. and elsewhere. The program consists of 32 credits in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, modern Chinese theories, classic and modern Chinese literature, testing in Chinese and instructional technology. Two thirds of coursework of this program are conducted at Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University in two consecutive summers and the remaining classes are either held in New York City between the summers or in Nanjing in the third summer. Upon the successful completion of the coursework, students will receive a certificate from Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University. Upon successful defense of the thesis, students will receive a Masters degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University.To be eligible for this program, applicants must have a BA degree, be U.S. citizens or green card holders.Participants: 15 personsDates: from July 2 to July 30, 2017Place: Nanjing, China. The conference will address all of these opportunities and challenges, with an emphasis on the topics of: 1.RESEARCH: This area includes Linguistics, culture, pedagogy, program implementation, assessments, etc. 2.PRACTICE: This area includes student motivation, administration, program promotion, teaching materials, classroom instructional strategies, ACTFL 5 Cs standards application, teacher training, community engagement, etc. 3.INNOVATION: This area includes technology and media use, online and distance learning, application of recent research on brain and learning theories, etc. Participants: 250 persons attended this conference. (III) Nanjing Normal University Summer Master Program in Chinese To meet the growing demand for qualified Chinese language teachers in the U.S., the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York (CLTA-GNY) is handling applications for a master program in teaching Chinese as a foreign language offered by Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University, a major university with a strong program in teaching Chinese as a foreign language in China. This program is designed for people who wish to teach Chinese in the U.S. and elsewhere. The program consists of 32 credits in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, modern Chinese theories, classic and modern Chinese literature, testing in Chinese and instructional technology. Two thirds of coursework of this program are conducted at Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University in two consecutive summers and the remaining classes are either held in New York City between the summers or in Nanjing in the third summer. Upon the successful completion of the coursework, students will receive a certificate from Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University. Upon successful defense of the thesis, students will receive a Masters degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University.To be eligible for this program, applicants must have a BA degree, be U.S. citizens or green card holders.Participants: 15 personsDates: from July 2 to July 30, 2017Place: Nanjing, China.
