| IRS990/Desc | 0 | PROPERTY ACQUISITION, WETLAND RESTORATION, AND STEWARDSHIP PROTECTION: AS PART OF ITS MISSION, LRWP CONTINUED INVASIVE PLANT CONTROL AND OTHER NEEDED STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES AT ITS FIVE WETLAND PRESERVES: EAGLE MARSH (716 ACRES), ARROWHEAD PRAIRIE (158 ACRES), AND ARROWHEAD MARSH (97 ACRES), BUTTONBUSH BOTTOMS PRESERVE (25 ACRES), 53-ACRE LITTLE RIVER LANDING PRESERVE (CO-OWNED WITH ACRES LAND TRUST) ALREADY IN A NATURAL STATE, AND A 140-ACRE CONSERVATION EASEMENT ON PRIVATE LAND. LRWP PROTECTED 1,189 ACRES IN ITS PROJECT AREA AS OF 12/31/2015. WETLANDS BENEFIT NEARBY COMMUNITIES AND AREAS DOWNSTREAM BY ENHANCING FLOOD CONTROL, CLEANSING GROUNDWATER, AND OFFERING RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL. BIRD WATCHING, HIKING, AND NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY ARE POPULAR AT OUR PRESERVES. BIRDERS AND HIKERS WHO VISIT THE PRESERVE ENHANCE THE LOCAL ECONOMY. OUR PRESERVES ARE ALSO THE SITE OF MANY FREE COMMUNITY-ORIENTED EVENTS AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, TO BE DESCRIBED FURTHER BELOW. EAGLE MARSH (716 ACRES), LOCATED ON ENGLE ROAD ON THE SOUTHWEST EDGE OF FORT WAYNE, IS THE LARGEST INLAND WETLAND RESTORATION IN THE UNITED STATES, THE LARGEST NATURE PRESERVE IN ALLEN COUNTY AND ONE OF THE LARGEST WETLAND RESTORATIONS EVER IN INDIANA. WITH ADJACENT FOX ISLAND COUNTY PARK AND PRIVATE NATURAL LAND, IT COMPRISES NEARLY TWO SQUARE MILES OF WILDLIFE HABITAT. RESTORED TO A NATURAL ECOSYSTEM BETWEEN 2006 AND 2009, EAGLE MARSH OFFERS SHALLOW WATER WETLANDS, A SEDGE MEADOW, WET AND DRY PRAIRIES, MATURE FORESTED WETLAND, AND YOUNG TREES AND SHRUBS AS HABITATS FOR THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF WILDLIFE THERE. THE ADDITIONAL 41 ACRES OF MATURE FORESTED WETLAND PURCHASED BETWEEN 2007 AND 2010 FURTHER ENHANCED HABITAT DIVERSITY AT THE PRESERVE. AT EAGLE MARSH AND OUR OTHER PRESERVES, WE CONTINUED INTENSIVE WORK TO MANAGE INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES SUCH AS CALLERY PEAR TREES, REED CANARY GRASS AND PHRAGMITES WITH PRESCRIBED BURNS AT MOWING, HERBICIDE APPLICATIONS AND HAND-PULLING BY VOLUNTEERS. LRWP STAFF CONTINUED TO REGULARLY MONITOR FOR PROBLEMS ON AN EXTENSIVE FENCE UNTIL IT WAS REMOVED AS A PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW BERM IN THE FALL OF 2015 THAT STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES HAD BUILT EARLIER AT EAGLE MARSH TO PREVENT ASIAN CARP FROM CROSSING BETWEEN THE MISSISSIPPI AND GREAT LAKES WATER SYSTEMS DURING A FLOOD EVENT. OUR DIRECTOR OF PRESERVES AND PROGRAMS CONTINUED TO WORK WITH VARIOUS GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES TO MINIMIZE DISRUPTION AT THE PRESERVE AS THEY PLANNED HOW TO SEPARATE THE ENTIRE MISSISSIPPI AND GREAT LAKES BASINS AT EAGLE MARSH TO PREVENT INVASIVE FLORA OR FAUNA OF ANY KIND FROM TRANSFERRING FROM EITHER SYSTEM INTO THE OTHER. CONSTRUCTION ON THE ENLARGED BERM ON ONE SIDE OF THE GRAHAM- MCCULLOCH DITCH THAT TRAVERSES EAGLE MARSH WAS SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETED. AND OUR STAFF WILL REGULARLY MONITOR THE BERM FOR PROBLEMS. ARROWHEAD MARSH (97 ACRES) AND ARROWHEAD PRAIRIE (158 ACRES) LOCATED ACROSS THE ROAD FROM EACH OTHER NEAR ABOITE, INDIANA, WERE RESTORED TO WETLAND, PRAIRIE, AND FOREST DURING TWO TIME PERIODS. THE ORIGINAL 188 ACRES WERE RESTORED BETWEEN 2002 AND 2006, EXCEPT FOR A 13-ACRE MATURE WOODS AT ARROWHEAD MARSH THAT WAS LEFT INTACT. SIXTY-SEVEN ACRES ADDED TO ARROWHEAD PRAIRIE IN 2009 WERE RESTORED IN 2009 AND 2010. INTENSIVE STEWARDSHIP OF THE TWO PRESERVES CONTINUED IN 2015 TO HELP THE NATIVE PLANTS SURVIVE AND THRIVE. LITTLE RIVER LANDING NATURE PRESERVE (53 ACRES, CO-OWNED WITH ACRES LAND TRUST) IN HUNTINGTON BENEFITTED IN 2015 FROM STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES GUIDED BY A COMPREHENSIVE LAND MANAGEMENT PLAN CREATED BY LRWP. A LANDOWNER ADJACENT TO THE PROPERTY IS ALSO UNDER CONTRACT TO DO SOME BASIC INVASIVES MANAGEMENT, MOWING AND TRAIL CARE IN LINE WITH MANDATES OF THE PLAN. |

LRWP OFFERED A VARIETY OF FREE NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND EVENTS IN 2015 THAT SERVED MORE THAN 12,700 PARTICIPANTS, DUE IN LARGE PART TO OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH CANTERBURY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND A NUMBER OF FORT WAYNE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS, INCLUDING MANY SERVING LOW-INCOME POPULATIONS. 1. THERE ARE TWO MAJOR FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS HELD ANNUALLY AT EAGLE MARSH: EARTH DAY FORT WAYNE AND MONARCH FESTIVAL. EARTH DAY IS HELD IN APRIL IN TENTS ON ENGLE ROAD AND AT THE PRESERVE. THE FREE EVENT INCLUDED THE PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL NATURE GROUPS; EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS ON NATURE AND CONSERVATION, A NATURE WALK WITH EDUCATION STATIONS ON THE PRESERVES TRAILS, SPECIAL ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN, AND MANY ATTENDEES PLANTING NATIVE PLANTS AT THE PRESERVE. MONARCH FESTIVAL, HELD AT EAGLE MARSH IN SEPTEMBER, HIGHLIGHTS THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY AND THE PLIGHT OF OTHER POLLINATORS. THIS FREE EVENT INCLUDES EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS AS WELL AS GUIDED WALKS WHERE EDUCATORS OFFER INFORMATION ON WETLANDS AND THE PRESERVES FLORA AND FAUNA. ATTENDEES ALSO RECEIVED FREE NATIVE MILKWEED PLANTS, THE ONLY FOOD SOURCE FOR MONARCH CATERPILLARS, TO PLANT AT EAGLE MARSH OR IN THEIR GARDENS AT HOME. 2. WEEKLY, MONTHLY, AND SPECIAL GUIDED NATURE HIKES EDUCATE PARTICIPANTS ABOUT THE AREAS GEOLOGY, PLANTS AND WILDLIFE. 3. SENIOR PROGRAMS ARE HELD, INCLUDING A MONTHLY BREAKFAST AND NATURE PRESENTATION AS WELL AS PRESENTATIONS AT SENIOR CENTERS. 4. INFORMATIVE FREE NATURE PROGRAMS ARE GIVEN AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS BY LRWP STAFF OR OTHER EXPERTS ON SUCH TOPICS AS WETLAND WILDLIFE, NATIVE PLANTS, OR HISTORY OF THE LITTLE RIVER VALLEY. 5. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE CONDUCTED FOR SCHOOL GROUPS AND OTHER YOUTH GROUPS, INCLUDING CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS AND FIELD TRIPS TO LRWP PRESERVES. APPROXIMATELY 40% OF THE CHILDREN WERE FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN A PLANNED OUTREACH TO UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS. 6. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES WITH AN EDUCATIONAL FOCUS, SUCH AS LEARNING TO IDENTIFY INVASIVE PLANTS, THEN REMOVING THEM, WERE CONDUCTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. 7. PARTICIPATION AT OUTREACH EVENTS HELD BY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDED LRWP WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISTRIBUTE EDUCATIONAL AND OTHER INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS. 8. LRWP'S SIX TO TWELVE PAGE NEWSLETTER WITH A STRONG EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT IS DISTRIBUTED TO APPROXIMATELY 550 PEOPLE QUARTERLY. 9. LRWP'S WEBSITE, WWW.LRWP.ORG, OFFERED INFORMATION ON THE BENEFITS OF WETLANDS, HISTORY/GEOLOGY OF THE LITTLE RIVER VALLEY, NATIVE PLANTS AND WILDLIFE. 10.
