Part III, Line 28, Program Service Accomplishments--The Hamilton County Master Gardeners Association is a volunteer organization whoses members have completed the master gardener program through Purdue University and the County Extension Office. Our primary purposes are to further our own knowledge of good gardening practices in Central Indiana and to share that knowledge with the gardening public. To attain these goals in 2014, HCMGA held monthly membership meetings with speakers throughout the year and members participated on one or more of the Association committees. The Association also maintained permanent display beds at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds that are open to the public and feature All-American selection annual flowers and vegetables, daylilies, iris, perennials, and midwest native plants. Work continued on maintaining and developing public gardens throughout the county. The beds provide information to the public through plant labeling and handouts as well as by direct contact with visitors while members are working. Members of the association participated in sharing good gardening information through a number of other direct means, including, but not limited to, our website, the speakers bureau, seeds of knowledge, and voice mail at the extension office, the last allowing members of the gardening public to talk directly with a master gardener to get help with gardening questions and problems. Through the voice mail, public speaking, and various other activities, we also provide support to the extension educator. Members staffed an information booth at the Hamilton County 4-H Fair. The members participated in the annual 4-H mini day camp, teaching hundreds of six and seven year olds about seed starting. Minimum required hours are 12 volunteer and 6 education hours per year. The 342 members donated over 17,000 volunteer hours and reported over 5,000 hours in furtherance of their individual education in 2014. The HCMGA also gives to the community in the form of scholarships, which are available to any county resident majoring in horticulture or a related field. The application requirement was amended to include the child or grandchild of an active HCMGA member, regardless of the applicant's place of residence. In 2014, five scholarships were awarded.
