The Finance Committee reviews a draft of the form 990 in detail. Then after receiving the approval of the Committee, the final 990 is presented to the full Board of Directors for approval to file with the Internal Revenue Service

Conflict of interest policy compliance Part VI line 12C

All Board members and key employees are required to review the conflict of interest policy annually and upon joining the Board. They are required to disclose in writing any business done, directly or indirectly, with the Society. Any compensated business to be done between the Society and a Board member must be reviewed by and approved by the other members of the Board in advance. Each Board member and key employee signs the statement indicating his or her compliance with the policy.

Part V, Lines 2a and 2b-Payroll Tax Return FilingsThe Society uses a PEO, WorkSmart, for employment reporting purposes. The PEO complies with all employment return filing requirements under its name and employer identification number.

Financial Statement Notes

Footnote for uncertain tax position under FIN 48 (Part X)

Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the Society and recognize a tax liability if the Society has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by various Federal and state taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the Society, and has concluded that as of December 31, 2020 and 2019, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liablilty or disclosure in the accompanying financial statement. As such, the Society is generally exempt from income taxes. However, the Society is required to file Federal Form 990 - Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax and a corresponding state return, which are informational returns only. The Society has filed its Federal and state tax returns for periods through December 31, 2019. These income tax returns are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the later of the date the return was filed or its due date (including extensions). As of the date of the financial statements were available to be issued, there were no examinations for any tax periods in progress.

IRS990/Desc0The Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) is an open admission, no-kill facility serving as both the animal control facility and Humane Society for Hamilton County, Indiana. HSHC takes in over 3,300 animals each year including hundreds at risk for euthanasia in other Indiana shelters. In addition to pet adoption, HSHC both funds and facilitates community outeach programs that connect children, at-risk youth, seniors, and Hoosier veterans with the healing power of pets. Our K-12 youth education and Scout programs are planting seeds of kindness, responsibility, and philanthropy in thousands of children each year. HSHC has also taken on a leadership role in the state of Indiana to educate against breed discrimination and development of stronger animal ordinances to offer better protection of domestic pets and stronger legal consequences for those convicted of animal cruelty.

It also covers all costs, including daily care and the initial vetting of the adoptable animals HSHC rescues from other Indiana shelters who are at-risk for euthanasia.

These alarming statistics prompted HSHC to make it our mission to improve the emotional well being of Hoosier veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury by pairing them with carefully selected shelter animals in need of homes. The Pets Healing Vets program, which is fully funded and facilitated by HSHC, was established in 2012 to do just that. Pets Healing Vets is currently the only veteran-emotional support pet matching program in the country that will cover all costs of pet ownership for the life of the pet--up to and including--food, annual vaccines, preventatives, general supplies, training, boarding, grooming and emergency medical care. Thirty veterans are participating in this program.
