| IRS990/Desc | 0 | FACILITY OPERATIONS - FACILITY MANAGEMENT HAS BEEN A MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY FOR ARTS PLACE, INC. SINCE 1983. ARTS PLACE OPERATES THREE COMMUNITY ARTS FACILITIES. THESE FACILITIES ARE LOCATED AS FOLLOWS:JAY COUNTY - THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS WAS BEGUN THROUGH THE 1983 ACQUISITION OF A 1935 STRUCTURE ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED AS AN AUTO DEALERSHIP. THROUGH A $500,000 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN THE STRUCTURE WAS CONVERTED INTO AN ARTS CENTER. SINCE THAT TIME, ARTS PLACE HAS CONDUCTED TWO ADDITIONAL CAPITAL CAMPAIGNS. IN 2000 A $2.9 MILLION PROJECT NEARLY TRIPLED THE SPACE OF THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE TO ABOUT 21,000 SQUARE FEET, ADDED AN ARTS PARK, AS WELL AS TWO PARKING LOTS. IN 2020, ARTS PLACE BROKE GROUND ON THE LEGACY CAPITAL PROJECT, WHICH WAS PART OF A $2.4 MILLION CAMPAIGN TO EXPAND, RENOVATE, AND ENHANCE THE CAMPUS. SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETED IN LATE AUGUST 2021, THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS NOW INCLUDES THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, WHICH INCLUDES THE 285-SEAT HALL-MOSER THEATRE, HUGH N. RONALD GALLERY, WEAVER COMMUNITY GALLERY, YOUNG MUSIC EDUCATION WING (WITH SEVEN MUSIC STUDIOS AND AN ENSEMBLE ROOM), A REHEARSAL/GREEN ROOM, STAGE SHOP, A RECEPTION AND DINING ROOM KNOWN AS GOODRICH HALL, LARGE MEETING ROOM, AND OFFICE SPACE. ACROSS THE STREET IN ARTS PARK STANDS THE HUDSON CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS. IT HOLDS TWO LARGE CLASSROOMS, A KILN ROOM WITH THREE KILNS INCLUDING A 3,000 LB. GAS KILN, A GLAZING ROOM, WAITING ROOM, AND STORAGE ROOM. A PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS IS ITS PUBLIC ART. THESE WORKS INCLUDE THE MASSIVE TILE RELIEF MURAL, LANDSCAPE'S LEGACY BY CLEVELAND ARTIST RHONDA FRANKLIN. THIS CERAMIC INSTALLATION WAS THE RESULT OF A THREE-YEAR PROJECT THAT INCLUDED OVER 40 APPRENTICES AND VOLUNTEERS. ON THE GROUNDS MAY BE FOUND THE BRONZE SCULPTURE AUTUMN BY HAROLD "TUCK" LANGLAND OF GRANGER, INDIANA. THE PERMANENT COLLECTION SEVERAL OTHER SCULPTURES, AS WELL AS DOZENS OF PAINTINGS AND WOODCUTS. THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS IS NORMALLY HOME TO AN INTENSIVE YEAR-ROUND OFFERING OF EXHIBITS, PERFORMANCES, AND ARTS INSTRUCTION. THE CAMPUS ALSO PROVIDES A UNIQUE TEACHING, MEETING AND CELEBRATION SPACE FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS, AS WELL AS LOCAL BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY. WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE LEGACY CAPITAL PROJECT AND THE WANING OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE ORGANIZATION EXPECTS TO RETURN TO A FULL SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES. PREVIOUS TO THE PANDEMIC, ANNUAL TRAFFIC TYPICALLY EXCEEDED 30,000 VISITS. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS DESIGNATED THAT THE INCOME FROM THE ANN H. GOODRICH ENDOWMENT BE USED FOR COSTS RELATING TO JAY COUNTY CAMPUS OPERATIONS. THREE FUNDS AT THE PORTLAND FOUNDATION HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED TO PROVIDE FOR VARIOUS COSTS OF ARTS PLACE'S PORTLAND CENTER. THESE INCLUDE THE MAXWELL AND CORNELIA NAAS ARTS COUNCIL FUND AT THE PORTLAND FOUNDATION THAT SERVES AS AN ENDOWMENT FOR MAJOR RENOVATIONS AND REPAIRS TO THE PORTLAND FACILITY. ANOTHER ENDOWMENT FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF THE FACILITY WAS ESTABLISHED THROUGH A BEQUEST BY THE LATE HELEN BARRENBRUGGE IN FISCAL YEAR 2008. ALSO, AT THE PORTLAND FOUNDATION, THE HAWKINS COMMUNITY TRUST FUND PROVIDES OPERATING SUPPORT FOR THE PORTLAND FACILITY.ST. MARYS - IN LATE 2005 ARTS PLACE ASSUMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE COLLECTIVE CENTER, A SMALL FACILITY IN DOWNTOWN ST. MARY'S, OHIO. THE RENTED STRUCTURE WAS ORIGINALLY OPENED IN MAY OF 2005 BY A GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS SEEKING TO START AN ARTS CENTER. IN LATE 2005 THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AGREED TO ACCEPT THE COLLECTIVE CENTER AS A PROGRAM OF ARTS PLACE. THE CENTER'S LOCATION HAS MOVED THREE TIMES SINCE THEN. IN 2015 THE CURRENT LOCATION AT 207 EAST SPRING STREET WAS SECURED THROUGH A LEASE WITH THE CITY OF ST. MARYS, WHICH HAD ACQUIRED THE BUILDING FOR THE SPECIFIC USE BY ARTS PLACE. THE FACILITY INCLUDES A CLASSROOM, A GALLERY, AND OFFICE SPACE. LOCAL ORGANIZERS AND THE CITY OF ST. MARYS HAVE MADE A NUMBER OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FACILITY OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS, INCLUDING A NEW AND MORE ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC RESTROOM. LOCAL INPUT FOR THE OPERATIONS OF THE AUGLA |

ENSEMBLES CONDUCTED INCLUDE PERCUSSION, BRASS, ORCHESTRAL STRINGS, FLUTE, AS WELL AS THE JAY COUNTY COMMUNITY BAND AND THE COMMUNITY CHOIR, WHICH IS CALLED A CHOIRED TASTE. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, MOST ENSEMBLES WERE NOT OFFERED DURING THE FISCAL YEAR, WHILE IN-PERSON PRIVATE LESSONS WERE CONDUCTED WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING, MASKS, AND SIGNIFICANT HYGIENE PROTOCOLS FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY. INTRODUCTORY MUSIC INSTRUCTION FOR PRESCHOOLERS ONCE AGAIN THROUGH THE FIRST STEPS CLASSES IN THE SUMMER OF 2021. CLASS OFFERINGS, FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS, INCLUDED DRAWING, PRINTMAKING, CERAMIC HANDBUILDING, WEAVING, JEWELRY MAKING, WATERCOLORS, ALCOHOL INKS, RESIN CASTING, TIE DYING, SCULPTURE, MASK-MAKING, NEEDLE FELTING, QUILTING, OIL PAINTING, CERAMIC TILES, CERAMIC WHEEL THROWING, AND BASKET WEAVING. INSTRUCTION WAS PROVIDED AT ALL THREE OF THE ARTS PLACE CENTERS. WHILE CLASS SIZES WERE REDUCED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE PROGRAM OPERATED THROUGHOUT THE FISCAL YEAR. EXHIBITS - THIS PROGRAM IS CONDUCTED AT ALL THREE ARTS PLACE CENTERS. WHILE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC GENERALLY PRECLUDED ARTS PLACE FROM HOLDING EXHIBIT RECEPTIONS, A YEAR-ROUND SCHEDULE OF EXHIBITIONS WAS PRESENTED AT ALL THREE CENTERS. THE LARGEST SPACE, THE HUGH N. RONALD GALLERY AT THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS, PROVIDES A HIGHLY FLEXIBLE EXHIBITION SPACE. SMALLER GALLERIES ARE OPERATED AT THE BLACKFORD AND AUGLAZIE/MERCER CENTERS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 2021, TWENTY-EIGHT EXHIBITS WERE ORGANIZED. THE ANNUAL REGIONAL STUDENT ART EXHIBITION WAS ONCE AGAIN PRESENTED AT THE JAY COUNTY CAMPUS. THE EXHIBIT FEATURED THE WORK OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM THE SERVICE AREA. THE ALCOVE, AN AREA ART ASSOCIATION, ORGANIZED A GROUP SHOWING OF LOCAL ARTISTS. THE MAJORITY OF EXHIBITS PRESENTED AT THE HUGH N. RONALD MEMORIAL GALLERY WERE ONE OR TWO-PERSON SHOWS. THE BLACKFORD COUNTY ARTS CENTER CONDUCTED ITS SEVENTH JURIED ART SHOW IN LATE JULY 2020. THE AUGLAIZE/MERCER CENTER JURIED SHOW, SCHEDULED FOR EARLY JULY, WAS CANCELLED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THE 2021 SHOW WAS ABOUT TO OPEN AS THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED. PERFORMANCES - PRESENTING PERFORMING ARTISTS REMAINS A CENTRAL PART OF ARTS PLACE PROGRAMMING. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR, ALL PERFORMANCES UNTIL JUNE WERE VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS. THESE INCLUDED PERFORMANCES BY LOCAL SING-SONGWRITER KEN BANTZ AND A PERFORMANCE BY ARTS PLACE MUSIC FACULTY ENTITLED, AWAKENING: SIX AMERICAN COMPOSERS. TO ORGANIZE THESE AND OTHER PERFORMANCES, ARTS PLACE PURCHASED EQUIPMENT TO MAKE HIGH QUALITY LIVE CASTS. IN JUNE 2021, ARTS PLACE PRESENTED ITS FIRST IN-PERSON CONCERT SINCE MARCH 2020. THIS WAS A PRESENTATION OF THE DAVE BENNETT QUARTET AT HUDSON FAMILY PARK AMPHITHEATER IN PORTLAND. ARTS PLACE CONTINUED WITH ANOTHER CONCERT AT THE AMPHITHEATER LATER IN THE SUMMER. IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES RETURNED TO THE HALL-MOSER THEATRE STAGE IN OCTOBER OF 2021. PUBLIC INFORMATION SERVICES - ARTS PLACE PROVIDED ARTS INFORMATION SERVICES ON ARTISTS, ARTS EVENTS, AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS IN BOTH THE SERVICE AREA AND WELL BEYOND. WEB SERVICES AND SOCIAL MEDIA WERE THE PRIMARY TOOLS FOR PROVIDING THIS INFORMATION. THE CORPORATION ALSO PUBLISHES AN ONLINE NEWSLETTER. THE WEBSITE ARTSLAND.ORG PROVIDES UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON ARTS EVENTS AND SERVICES PRESENTED OR HOSTED BY ARTS PLACE. |
