“Current earnings in endowment funds are used to fund current operations of the philharmonic in accordance with donor wishes. The original gift (principal) amounts are maintained into perpetuity. The philharmonic operates under investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding to programs supported by its endowment. Endowment assets include those assets of donor-restricted funds that the organization must hold in perpetuity or for a donor-specific period(s) as well as board-designated funds. Under this policy, as approved by the board, the endowment assets are invested in a manner that is intended to maximize total return within reasonable and prudent levels of risk. The organization expects its endowment funds, over time, to provide a moderate rate of return annually. Actual returns in any given year may vary from this amount. Management has been monitoring its endowment investments with the objective of preserving principal.”
