Habitat for humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Four of our members have a business relationship with each other, but not with our organization other than their roles as board members. Eric strouse works at a branch of commercial and savings bank, a business that assists the holmes county habitat for humanity. Andrew brower works at miller, mast, mason & bowling, another business that assists the holmes county habitat for humanity. All members must adhere to the organization's conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization submits its financial information to an independent accounting firm. The accounting firm uses the submitted information, makes needed adjustments to update the discounts and fair market value on investment related accounts, and then prepares the tax-exempt return. Before submission, a copy of the prepared return is provided to the signing officer and is also made available to the remaining board members. It is the responsibility of that officer to review the return for accuracy and recommend any possible changes to the accounting firm. Once no more changes are needed, the return is submitted to the appropriate tax authorities.

The organization does have a written conflict of interest policy. The policy requires that as defined, any interested person has the duty to disclose any potential conflicts of interest as they arise. An annual disclosure form will also be used by the board members to disclose any potential conflicts. The policy also outlines how to determine if a conflict of interest exists and a procedure for handling if so.
