The Organization has three members: 1.) The Board of Directors jointly and collectively, 2.) The Secretariat of Catholic Charities Corporation and 3.) The Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

The Secretariat and the Bishop have such authority, but do not exercise that authority. Instead they defer to the Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors to make recommendations for new Board members. The Bishop approves or rejects recommendations after interviewing or researching all nominated potential Board members.

The President and CEO's salary is set by the Secretariat of Catholic Charities Corporation within prescribed guidelines and approved by the Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. All positions within the organization are scaled based upon duties and responsibilities. Those scales are rated and evaluated by the Human Resources department using comparative salary and wage surveys from external sources. Individuals salaries are set within the established pay range for each position.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

St. Augustine Services adopted the accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which addresses the determination on whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, Services may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of St. Augustine Services and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (UBIT). The tax benefit recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. The guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes also addresses de-recognition, classification, interest and penalties in income taxes and accounting in interim periods. As of December 31, 2024, there were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities.
