Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation is a not-for-profit corporation as described in section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and, accordingly, is exempt from income taxes. Acf properties, llc and akron digital media center/akronist.com, llc are limited liability companies and are not tax paying entities for federal or state income tax purposes. Therefore, no provisions for federal and state income taxes have been recorded in the consolidated statements. The foundation accounts for uncertainties in income taxes in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, which provides for financial statement recognition and measurement of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in tax returns that have a greater than 50% chance of not being allowed under examination. No such positions have been recorded in the march 31, 2014 and 2013 consolidated financial statements. If such positions were taken, the resulting interest and penalties would be recognized as income tax expense. As of march 31, 2014, the foundation's federal informational returns are subject to examination by the internal revenue service for the fiscal years 2011 and thereafter.

IRS990/Desc0DURING FISCAL YEAR 2014, AKRON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MADE GRANTS TO ALL CORNERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WITHIN OUR FOUR STRATEGIC FUNDING AREAS: HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, EDUCATION, CIVIC AFFAIRS AND ARTS AND CULTURE. GRANTS WERE AWARDED TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE TRULY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF SUMMIT COUNTY RESIDENTS. TWO SUCH ORGANIZATIONS ARE SUMMIT EDUCATION INITIATIVE AND GAY GAMES 9. SUMMIT EDUCATION INITIATIVE SEEKS TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE DATA FROM ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE COUNTY IN ORDER TO DETERMINE KEY VARIABLES THAT INFLUENCE EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. THE $35,000 GRANT FROM AKRON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WILL ALLOW THEM TO DEVELOP TOOLS FOR THE NONPROFIT COMMUNITY TO EVALUATE HOW THEIR INTERVENTIONS INFLUENCE THOSE KEY VARIABLES. BY ALIGNING THESE EVALUATION EFFORTS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO BETTER COMPARE THE IMPACT OF OUR VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. AN $85,000 GRANT WAS GIVEN IN SUPPORT OF GAY GAMES 9, WHICH IS A WEEKLONG EVENT EXPECTED TO BRING IN 30,000 INTERNATIONAL VISITORS, WITH A REGIONAL ESTIMATED ECONOMIC IMPACT OF $15 MILLION.IN ADDITION, AKRON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SERVED AS A CONVENER OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ADDRESSING OTHER KEY ISSUES IN SUMMIT COUNTY. ISSUES SUCH AS EARLY EDUCATION, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, HOMELESSNESS AND THE CRITICAL ROLE A FATHER PLAYS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND NURTURING OF A CHILD ARE SOME OF THE AREAS THAT HAVE BEEN TARGETED WITH CONVENINGS AND FUNDING OVER THE PAST YEAR.
