| Bright Saver, Inc. is a new nonprofit organization with the mission to protect the environment, educate the public, and mitigate threats to human health from climate change and unsustainable energy consumption. It achieves this mission through public education about the benefits of clean energy and programs intended to make solar energy accessible nationwide regardless of income. Access to Solar power, and particularly rooftop solar, is a key aspect in climate action plans at all levels in the governmental and private sectors. However, currently only 5-7 percent of households have installed rooftop solar, and such systems belong predominantly to higher income, high credit-scoring homeowners. This paltry percentage results from the high cost of systems and their installation, requiring financing for most homeowners. In addition, more than one-third of households in the United States rent their dwelling, with a vastly disproportionate number being low-income and minority communities. Unsurprisingly, rental dwellings make up a small percentage of households equipped with solar. In sum, the three key barriers to wider-spread adoption of household solar, particularly in lower-income and underserved communities, include: (1) the need for outreach and education, (2) the high upfront installation costs, and (3) access to affordable financing for home solar systems. Bright Saver will address all three with two primary programs: Facilitating Solar Installation: Beginning with California and expanding over time across the US, Bright Saver will facilitate the adoption of solar currently unavailable by offering free installation and low-cost financing for non-rooftop systems. To identify the households in most need (both rental and ownership), Bright Saver will partner with other nonprofits and community organizations to identify and reach underserved populations who need this service most. In the future, Bright Saver may expand its programs to include additional renewable energy solutions, such as home battery storage, further empowering underserved communities to reduce their utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. Bright Saver anticipates that this program will constitute 80 percent of its time and resources. Public Education: Bright Saver will educate the public, particularly the communities it desires to serve, about the benefits of clean energy to mitigate climate change and energy cost reduction, as well as practical strategies for reducing personal carbon footprints. In doing so, Bright Saver will create and deliver educational materials to partner nonprofit and community organizations, as well as run training programs to serve the community at large. This public education will empower individuals and communities to make informed decisions about their energy consumption and clean energy production which together contribute to a more sustainable, healthier environment. Bright Saver anticipates that this program will constitute 20 percent of its time and resources. The foregoing programs will further Bright Saver's charitable and educational purposes in a number of ways. By providing underserved communities with education about solar energy, Bright Saver addresses both the immediate financial challenges in such communities and the broader challenge of decarbonizing homes, fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment in the face of climate change. Specifically, Bright Saver's activities further educational purposes and several charitable purposes, including relieving financial burdens for economically distressed communities, combatting community deterioration by contributing to the long-term stability and sustainability of communities, and preserving the environment by mitigating climate change. Bright Saver's activities will be conducted by its staff under the oversight of its board of directors. Bright Saver's funding will come from a mix of gifts, grants, and program revenue. | $0 | $0 |
